Amazon more than doubled its profits from 1st quarter 2107 in 1st quarter 2018. Because they're making so much money they decided to celebrate by - raising the price of Amazon Prime from $99/yr to $119/year.

The change in pricing will go into effect May 11, and it will apply to Prime renewals beginning June 16.

That's more than $2B yearly. Think they can manage to stay afloat?

kinda sucks but at least they've been adding stuff to prime to increase the value proposition.

Lame. I don't order as much from Amazon as I used to, but that free two-day shipping is so nice to have. $119 is really pushing it; I think I'll drop it once it hits $150 which probably won't be too far off.

I might be more inclined to keep it if I could get Prime Instant Video to just work with Kodi. I've resorted to using some crappy WMC addon, but it sucks so much I don't even watch anything on it.

Can you elaborate? Wife wanted a couple of Blu-ray movies and to buy them at $25/each, up from $23/each at the release price, you had to be a Prime member or Amazon wouldn't sell them to you. Also, so far we've reduced the number of orders from Amazon this year when we had three shipments not get to us, one taking a month to resolve. Could had bough those movies for the same price at Target/Walmart/Best Buy and not bothered with the potential loss of shipment, or the Prime 'deliver it to the wrong person again'.

At this rate Netflix might start to look a lot more promising for the video aspects. I guess that 100 Million Prime subscribers means Amazon can afford to lose a few million customers by making the rest pay for the $$$ losses.

Some of this is new, some of this is not so new but has been updated with more stuff. Prime reload was the most interesting one for me if you don't have an amazon credit card.
  • Prime Now: Free 2-hour delivery available on an enhanced grocery selection including select Whole Foods 365 products, meat, and alcohol in select cities. Now delivering in over 30 cities nationwide.

  • Amazon Restaurants: Delivery from restaurants now available in more than 25 cities across the US, including Brooklyn, Oakland, Orlando, Phoenix, San Jose and Washington, D.C.

  • Prime Photos: Prime Photos offers free unlimited photo storage for Prime members. Now use just your voice to view photos on Fire TV and Echo Show.

  • Prime Video: New original movies including The Big Sick, and TV series like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Sneaky Pete, have been added to Prime. Stream at no extra cost.

  • Prime Music: Alexa is now available in the Amazon Music app for iOS and Android. Listen to over two million songs and thousands of playlists and stations, always ad-free and on-demand.
  • Woot.com: Amazon Prime members now get free standard shipping on all Woot! orders and free express shipping on all Shirt.Woot orders. Try Amazon's coolest (and only) daily deal site now.

  • Prime Reload: Get 2% rewards every time you reload your Amazon.com Gift Card Balance with your checking account. No fees or interest. Your Gift Card Balance never expires.

Gonna cancel when my renew comes up. Probably for the best since I don't need the junk I'm buying now plus all amazon does now is price match other companies that have sales. I can see myself doing walmart's free pickup in the future.

Why did they even need to price hike it again so soon? More than doubling their profits wasn't enough?

I broke down and tried the trial of prime. Other than the free shipping they had nothing I wanted so I dropped it.

Back to the game of waiting till my cart total gets to 35 or whatever it is for free standard shipping.

Cancelling my membership at renewal unless there is some type of incentive. I almost did it last year, but my amex had an offer that lowered it substantially.

I think I might cancel my prime membership as well. I only use shipping and instant video, and with instant video, it's mostly for kids stuff for my toddler.

So disappointed that they felt the need to up it $20 after they just upped it what, 3 years ago?

My membership isn't set to renew until Sept 2018. If I were to cancel it now (and get a pro-rated credit back), can I re-sign up at $99 for a full year to try and maximize my prime membership at a lower cost?

This doesn't affect me since I rarely order anything from Amazon these days so have no use for prime.

So to recap:

1. Amazon announced they now have more than 100 million Prime members globally.

2. Amazon announced they made $1.6 billion in profit in just the first 3 months of 2018, which is more than double from the same time period last year.

3. So they raised the annual service fee by $20?

I order a lot off Amazon, and Prime is very convenient, but where does $120 a year in value come from? I mean, I personally order enough stuff monthly to make the breakdown of $10/mo to be worth the free shipping, but that's a big pill to swallow for a lot of people who don't do as much online shopping. The increase from $79 to $99 was already bad enough, but there's something about going past the $99 line that makes it seem unreasonable. Current Prime features:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201910360

1. I like the "free" 2-day shipping on everything (which you pay for in that annual subscription cost, lol).

2. I like Spotify Premium a lot & use that instead of Amazon Music. Partly because Amazon Music never has what I want to listen to, and partly because you have to pay another $7.99 a month (under Prime...$9.99/mo otherwise) for Amazon Music Unlimited if you want ALL the songs. Plus Spotify Premium is still only $4.99/mo for students!

3. I think their selection of free Prime TV shows & movies stinks in comparison to Netflix. And Netflix is already a struggle because a lot of times you feel like you've already watched all of the good stuff on Netflix, and they're just stringing you along with enough quality new content like Daredevil to keep you paying for it. Or if you have kids, they have a lot of great cartoons available, which is really convenient. You also have Amazon Channels, which offers stuff like HBO, Showtime, and Starz...except you have to pay between an extra $4.99 to $14.99 per month for those channels on TOP of Prime.

4. I don't like the idea of the unlimited Amazon Photo feature. Google Photos already does this...for free. What happens to your photos if you stop paying for Prime? "If you cancel or do not renew your Amazon Prime membership, the unlimited photo storage benefit associated with the membership ends". So why would I use this service over Google's FREE unlimited photo service? Plus you only get 5 gigs towards video on Amazon. With Google Photos, all photos up to 16-megapixels & all videos up to 1080p resolution are free. If you have a 20-megapixel camera & a 4K video camera, you can pay for extra storage if you need storage for the higher resolution content.

5. "Prime Pantry: Prime members in select regions can pay an additional monthly membership fee to receive FREE shipping on all Prime Pantry orders of $40 or more, or pay a flat shipping fee for each order they place under $40." First, I hate how they word this lol - "Prime members (note: will now be $119/year) can pay an additional monthly membership fee to receive FREE shipping" WUT NOW? lol. You can pay extra to get "free" shipping? That doesn't sound free! AND there's a $40 minimum? Hahaha. I mean, sure, I understand how this works economically, but c'mon. Second, I'm a big Prime user, but I haven't really bothered to use Pantry because it's yet another extra cost. Right now, it's $5.99 per box (flat fee) for up to 45 pounds of products. They are switching over to a new model where it's $5 a month for Prime Pantry, which is better than a per-box fee, but it's still another $60 annually on TOP of Prime! If you want me to buy my pantry/grocery items from you, why don't you just include Prime Pantry for free in the now-$120/mo Prime fee? Again, I know, economics, but still...I'll just swing by the grocery store on the way home for free, thanks. Plus, as much as I do meal prep, I don't really plan ahead enough to slowly fill up my Pantry box & then wait for it to be shipped vs. just hitting up the local store for some paper towels & ketchup, you know? And most grocery stores in the area offer delivery (for a fee) or a drive-in trunk-fill-up service already (which is insanely convenient), so I already have local options if I want to be extra-lazy. I think Pantry could be pretty convenient if you're home-bound from being, say, disabled, but if you're home-bound from being elderly, I don't think that the older generation is largely going to overcome the technological barrier of using a website to randomly order pantry items & pay a monthly fee for it.

You could probably spend $100 a month on the various Amazon subscription fees if you signed up for everything. And subscriptions are great for companies, because that's pretty much a guaranteed line of incoming coming in until you die. One study I read said that 95% of Prime users had no intention of cancelling Prime. Plus, the latest data says that non-Prime Amazon uses spend $700 annually, Prime members spend $1,300 annually, and Echo owners spend $1,700 annually. Times those last two by 100 million Prime users worldwide. Dang!

Looks like Google is going after Amazon Prime Pantry:

https://express.google.com
About Google Express
Google Express helps you get your shopping done fast. You can shop a variety of popular stores including Walmart, Costco and Target on the app, the Express website, or by voice.

The service is available across the continental United States (not including Alaska and Hawaii)
You’ll get free delivery* when you meet the per-store minimum ($25 or $35 with most stores)
In most cases delivery times range from same-day to 3-day delivery: this depends on your area, availability and the store you’re shopping from
Note: with stores arranging their own deliveries, delivery times can range from 1 day to a week or more. With these stores, delivery fees may also vary. Find out more.

Here's how it works:
Shop from an array of stores, all in one place
Add items to your cart with your Google Express app, at google.com/express or with your Google Assistant
Choose a delivery day
We arrange for a delivery company to bring it to you
Note: Some stores arrange their own deliveries. Read more.
*Free delivery means no shipping & service fees. Orders must meet store minimums before taxes & fees in select delivery areas.

I suppose you can make a twitch account and subscribe to yourself with it for $30 for the year since amazon takes the 50% cut out of each subscription.
