Time to see a bunch of older shows I never got into.

Boardwalk Empire, The Wire, Oz, the last few seasons of sopranos, True Blood (maybe...vampires are meh), deadwood, and rome.

Also, Band of Brothers is always worth a rewatch in HD. My dvd set need not come out of the closet.

This. There are a lot of HBO shows that I always wanted to watch but just never got around to buying on DVD/BD. BoB is probably the first, though I have probably 40 hours of stuff on DVR that we just never have time to watch. The hardest thing is getting my wife to gain interest...it took me a while (and about 3 episodes) to convince her to give Breaking Bad a shot. I'm sure she'd watch True Detective but it looks like it'll be a while to get that.

Boardwalk Empire is the best show ever, even better than BB imo. Eastbound and Down is amazing as well, everyone should watch that. I always passed it up because of the baseball angle(yawn at sports) but damn that show is incredible

I have never cared much about TV shows, but watched Breaking Bad after so many recommendations. Very impressed.

Then tried many different ones and all of them were...meh...but recently started watching Boardwalk and this definitely looks good. The production, the writing, characters.

The rest I can all pass...including the much hyped GOT.

Netflix becoming more and more irrelevant. Their movie collection sucks big time anyway, and they are not able to get most of the good TV shows either. Their "original programming" like House of Cards....what a terrible cliched boring show. Kevin Spacey doing the typical Kevin Spacey role for the 5124th time.

Well most tv is hot trash but there are some gems in the rough(pretty much anything on HBO). I think HOC was amazing, same level as an HBO show imo

I just could not get into it, and I know I am not the only one. Have gotten bored of Spacey doing the same thing over and over again. Though he isn't the only one who does that.

But Boardwalk Empire, I am really starting to like it. You can just tell the quality of a show / movie by the level of details and attention that goes into each scene, among other things of course. Like Breaking Bad.

Could not agree more with you about the general assessment of TV.

HBO will eventually offer themselves as a stand alone service. The cable model as it exists is just not sustainable.

House of Cards is a top shelf show. Very well produced and not boring at all. Had my absolute attention through every episode.

GoogleTV still doesn't have an HBO Go app (even though it's an Android device), XBox One, etc...

Can't you sideload it? I did that on a Xiaomi box (Chinese android based settop box), works OK, though I had to attach a mouse to navigate as the remote doesn't work.

You can't on GTV currently. It's probably because HBO Go uses the NDK and GTV doesn't support that yet on most GTV devices. Some of the newer TV sets with GTV integrated have been updated to support the NDK, but there aren't many of those.

Looks like you can sideload HBO Go on the Amazon Fire TV but apparently it's playing video at low resolution. Plus side loaded apps on the Fire TV don't show up in the main app list, you have to go to Settings->Applications to launch them.

This is huge for amazing streaming. Netflix doesn't have HBO does it?

I don't "stream" anything. All my media is local, it comes from the usual places....

I used to do that until I discovered the joy of an xbmc box with the add ons like 1channel, project free tv etc

As long as HBO keeps getting bribe money from cable they will stay with them. Eventually HBO will go stand alone, but for now it makes more sense to keep milking the cable cash cow as much as possible before splitting.

I was pretty excited when I saw the news this morning...and I'm hoping that the overall quality is better than HBOGO. I watched the latest Silicon Valley via HBO Go yesterday and really can't stand how poor the quality is.

I might even try to get my dad to use my account...there are some shows he would love.

So here is the thing

- If you have HBO through cable subscription, that is, you pay for it
- You buy a box or have a box that has HBOGO app on it

You may still not be able to have HBOGO. Why? Because your cable company may not support that particular HBOGO on that particular box. For example, having HBO through Comcast and having Roku (which does have HBOGO) still leaves you without HBOGO. You can't make these things up. This is how the paying customer is treated.

There are things that are on Netflix. There are many which are not. You hear or read about something, you go to Netflix, type that name and all you get is "titles similar to....."

There are things that are on Amazon Prime. Then there are those for which you have to pay separately to Amazon, even if you are a Prime member.

Then ofcourse there are things which are neither on Netflix or Amazon

The whole business model is so badly fragmented and consumer unfriendly that is just unreal. The whole thing needs to be drastically simplified, like what Apple did to the music business.

That's one of the reasons I love GoogleTV. Search covers content on Netflix, Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, Redbox Instant, etc... When you find a movie or TV show you select it and then you click the watch/buy/rent button and it'll give you a list of all the places you can watch it, defaulting to free of course, along with all the rental and purchases prices and whether it's SD or HD. You select and option and it opens directly to that Movie/episode in the app where it's available.

That is exactly what they don't want, a single distribution point like what happened to the music industry. For media companies Apple and the music industry is a tale of woe of what not to do, and what happens if you outsource your future.

Something sounds odd with your setup to me, I actually stream HBOGO on my HTPC in 1920 X 1080P on my 720P in the bedroom.

?

It looks much better than the set top DVR my wife still likes having in there.

I like how HBO is all "Waaaaaaaahhh! If only people pirating Thrones paid us a dollar an episode!"

Now they finally are making hbo available for those who've cut the cord.

And Thrones isn't part of it. GG HBO.

That was a very popular show. Netflix definitely has some strategic content issues to solve going forward, but they have far and away the best global streaming platform there is right now.
