Considering there are only 9 or so products that are sold this way, it definitely has not taken off yet.

Just last night I bought something that came in a plastic package, but on the back it was perforated so you could easily open it. I think that's a great way to go for B&M stores. It still deters theft, and it's easy to open.
As it happens, it was shipped to me in an excessively large box by Amazon.com

How does it deter theft if it can be easily opened?

Opening it is noisy and a lot more difficult to do discretely than simply putting a product in your pocket.

When i was younger and worked at wal-mart people would open boxs to VCRs and steal them. I open lots of boxs at stores to look at the item to see if i want it. I make lots of noise and pull it out of the container and never been looked at and/or stopped.

Ironically, this product is packaged in a clamshell:

what sorta worries me is that this isn't as tamper-evident as a heat sealed clamshell design, so what is to indicate to me that this product could potentially be a refurbished item that they repackaged using this method?
