Hmm... not sure what to think of this driver yet. I booted up BF4 for the first time in a while, and I was extremely impressed with the performance boost (I'm guessing because of Mantle?). Basically, I was able to turn on Ultra settings with 4x MSAA, and it ran almost perfectly fluidly at 60fps (save for a few of the high-intensity scenes and explosions). That's really awesome for a 2-year-old 7870, with no overclocks or anything.

It ran this way for ~5 minutes until suddenly the performance dropped out of nowhere and it started getting stutter-y. It happened when I opened the dev console and typed in the PerfOverlay.DrawFPS command to view my FPS. I have no idea why it happened. Turning the command back off didn't make the FPS go back up.

I will test it again later tonight when I have more time. I'm sure most games run great on this driver, but BF4 is a little questionable to me.

Edit: Maybe this is a bug with BF4 or mantle where it takes the settings a few minutes to apply or something? When I first turned on Ultra settings, it looked pretty ultra good to me, but I don't know.

Edit 2: I booted up the game a second time just to check. Yeah, I guess I probably spoke too soon. 4xMSAA is still too much of a perf hit and my framerate was floating around in the 30's and 40's. Disabling MSAA (but leaving everything else on Ultra) puts me back at 60fps most of the time though, which is still not bad at 1080p.

My 7970 shows 2500~2700MB of consumed vram in 1080P + ultra + no AA. So I think that a 7870 with 2GB will not run the game well with max settings under mantle.

Frostbite takes advantage of additional vram by boosting LOD to further distances. If you have less vram, objects will appear blurred out sooner. So it may say its using 2.8GB of vram, it actually doesn't need it and will scale down. But with 4xMSAA, cards with less than 2gb of vram will struggle.

Yep but mantle is consuming way more vram than DX. In the same settings Im seeing DX peak vram around 1.9GB while mantle go as high as 2.7GB.

I don't think Dice has memory management quite optimized yet. There seems to be some issues still to sort.

Is this true of just BF4 though, or is it seen in other games with mantle and DX options? If it only happens in BF4 mantle, but not in other mantle titles, then it is a BF4 game issue.

Can you provide any further info for either scenario?

So for the first time ever I have been bitten by the failed driver installed. I have tried to install this driver three times, each time windows will fail to fully boot. Go through, run DDU to remove everything, and try again. The first time actually I just tried to install the way I always do.

Anybody have any thoughts on how to get this driver to install? I play BF4 a lot and would love any mantle fixes that are in this version. I was on 14.2 Beta before.

Tbh, i find this whql worse performing than 14.2 beta in bf4. The annoying stuttery fps loss every once in a while is a lot more prominent on 14.4, at least with my 7950. I even had to change my forceahead limit settings to make it more bearable

I had trouble with the release candidate, found out it would loop boot, whenever I installed the AHCI driver.

Tried these with my quadfire+eyefinity setup... same as the rest of the 14.x branch.. major shutdowns and BSODs... Tried going back to 13.12 but had to do a fresh install of windows to fix it.

If you have quadfire+eyefinity stay away from this driver like the plague.

I had considered not installing that, think I will try it. Maybe AMD is trying to force an AHCI controller that my older mobo doesnt support (AMD board).

Just a quick update. I did a custom install and unchecked the AHCI driver, and everything is now working fine off 14.4.

On AMD systems, I alawys uncheck that. I don't think I've ever successfully installed their AHCI driver.

There is a known issue about display sleep. I have display sleep disabled on my system for this reason. Basically on mine, if the display goes to sleep,it does not come back. Its an issue with zero core.

Wouldnt disabling ULPS fix that as well?
