Thos are the Tbreds, and yes they are quite overclockable. A lot of them are getting to 1750mhz +, with quite a few of them reaching speeds of 1900mhz +

Damnit, after I bought that last nForce2 MSI mobo from PCClub on Monday I have to wait until my next depost on Friday to get my new CPU. I'm Jonesing for new overclocking action after taking my Duron 650 to a gig before gig CPU's were even sold. *twitch*

K7S5A is a great board at value price.

I have been using this board for 6 systems and never had any problem.

I've installed many of these boards and lemme tell ya, we have a 40-50% failure
on these boards. I have a stack of them sitting waiting for RMA. I really like the boards
when they work and the price + Pc133 support is perfect. Maybe I just got a bad batch but
even then its still not worth the risk anymore.

Couldn't agree more.

Heh K7S5A......just run a search in general hardware or motherboards and there's plenty of feedback on them, or better yet, run a google search of "K7S5A + Problems" and you'll find about 700,000 results or so

When does a value board lose its value? When you spend twice as much replacing "faulty" components that worked fine in your previous build to get the board to work? When you spend hours upon hours troubleshooting trying to get it to run at defaults or even post? When you have to run memtest for 2 days b/c your RAM is "faulty"? When you don't have a second system to help you in troubleshooting? When downtime doesn't isn't a big deal b/c you are waiting for parts or an RMA? When your CMOS resets itself every other day? When you have to download a Bootleg BIOS to change your FSB on a modern board? When you can't even get an accurate manual without downloadiing it? When you have to play "I hope I got the good revision board roulette"?

I've just scratched the surface with the K7S5A, there are many better solutions at the same price with equal if not better performance without the headaches and high failure rate.

There is a replacement bios for the K7S5A you can use to overclock it. It only gives a few choices but it does the trick on 2 of my systems with athlon 1600xp.

Personally, I think the only reason to buy a K7S5A is if you want to use SDRAm instead of DDR. It is a great value for people upgrading who have SDRam they want to salvage and the onbaord NIC is nice as well. They are picky about power supplies and Ram id using DDR are there certainly appears to be some issues with "lost Cmos settings".

For the upgrader who needs to use his old SDRam, I think the Shuttle AK32 offers a better overall value. It also can use SDRam or DDR has no onboard Lan but has the Cmedia sound onboard instead of the awful AC97 of the K7S5A. Also, its built on the KT266a chipset which is slightly faster than the K7S5A chipset. Overclocking is much easier as well on the Shuttle board. The Biostar board mentioned earlier is a great board as well but doesn't offer the DDR upgrade path like theK7S5A or the AK32.

As far as overclocking the XP1700 thouroughbred, go tothe newegg site and find the item and click on read reviews and you'll see what neweggs customers are saying about it. Many are hitting the 1800 to 1900Mhz (XP2200+ speeds) range quite easily -

Some of the user reviews on Newegg say that this processor came unlocked? Any truth to that? Once respone said the it was the KT400 and nForce chipset that unlocked the processor. How is that possible?

There is a lot of good information at overclockers.com and their forums. My conclusion is that all Tbreds including this 1700XP are unlocked, and that from their cpu database the 1700+ is expected to run at around 1800-1850MHz whereas the 1800+ is more likely to break 2GHz.

actually, the M7VIG features both SDR and DDR slots. it is a very nice board, rock solid and good performance. I'd pick it over the AK32 unless there is a need for the 5 or 6 PCI slots.

i got a 1700 from newegg after i ordered a 1800. did not matter because it is unlocked and it is at xp2000 on a ak31 with only a change in the bios.
so yes the t-breds are unlocked. runs cooler than the 1600 it replaced.

It doesn't say whether its a tbred or not on newegg's site, I bought the retail boxed version from monarchcomputer.com and you can see the palamino has the .18 micron and the Tbred says .13 micron
funny how the OEM .18 palamino is $69 and the .13 Tbred is $65,but I like having the 3 year warranty for $20 more anyway.

how can we tell if the $52 newegg 1700 is tbred or palamino, has anyone recieved theirs yet?

You should try and cancel your monarch order, its definitely a T-bred, and they've been available since the first week of November. :

AMD Athlon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred /266 FSB Processor CPU 1700+/ 1.47GHz -OEM, AXDA1700DLT3C

Straight from the item description. If the Thoroughbred didn't give it away, the AXDA designation in the part # means T-bred. DLT3C means its a Rev. A; DUT3C will mean Rev. B.

please guys

Here's some info on T-bred's and potential OC's I posted over in CPU/OCing:

It really depends on the stepping and week of the T-Bred A. I was an early adopter and jumped on the 1700+ T-bred (AIRGA week 32) and although it hasn't been a complete dud (does 1.825ghz now that I have a better OCing board and memory), it isn't nearly as good as the newer steppings (RIRGA Week 42 or later). From what I've been seeing, people are hitting 2 ghz easy with these chips.

Of course the ones we've all been waiting for that have been rumored to start appearing are the lower PR T-bred B's. These babies should hit 2.2-2.4ghz with relative ease, as the 2400+ have been doing.

Anyways, going with a 1700+ or 1800+ with a good PSU and good cooling/case airflow should allow you to keep the same multiplier (which is unlocked on Nforce2 boards ) and notch your FSB up from 133 to 166mhz as long as your RAM can handle it. This'll get you into the 1800mhz range and from there you can tweak your multi or FSB to get higher. AGP and PCI locks and memory speed ratios give you unprecedented control over your system....OCing has never been easier!!!
