Just need some opinions. I am upgrading my PC currently from socket 939 to socket am2. The motherboard i've decided on is the ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition with the nForce SLI 590 MCP chipset although I am having problems making a decision on a processor.

Currently I have a 4400+ 939, now I don't know if I should go with a 4600+ am2 or FX2. I feel silly thinking about getting the 4600+ am2 considering its not a vast improvement over my 4400+ 939 and there is the FX2 which very well may be a huge improvement, but its costly. I'd rather spend the extra cash and get something that has decent improvement over my 4400+ 939 instead of just getting a 4600+ am2.

Is there a huge performance difference between the 4600+ am2 and the FX2?

I'll be using 4 x 512mb PC5300 Mushkin DDR2, 2 XFX Geforce 7950 GX2s, PPC 1 KWatt PSU.

or should I just go balls out and get a E6300EE?

What you can do to get close to FX60 speeds is get a X2 5000+. It is a 512KBx2 Cache 2.6ghz cpu for AM2. That will be about a 10% increase over the 2.2ghz 1MBx2 part you have now. And if you get DDR2@800 then you can get around a 5% increase from that. So really, you have to decide whether the possible 15% in performance will be enough to warrant the extra money for the upgrade. Core2Duo may be the better idea if its performance increases that your looking for. But its your decision obviously.

Edit: I would personally keep what you have until Revision "G" if its AMD you want to stick with. While "G" will bring 'some' improvements, K8L will bring the Big Core improvements next year.

If you're going to update from 939, I'd definitley go with Conroe since going AM2 won't be a real big jump in performance from what you currently have.

I wouldnt be able to buy an FX at the moment (even if i did have the cash), when you can get something better for about 300 bucks.

I like AMD mysefl and just ordered a 4600, but the FX just doesnt make sense at this point in time.

Yeah I think I am gonna go over to the darkside and get the Conroe as expensive as it is amd for 200 more bucks I may as well get the top of the line.

If I was to get the Conroe also I'd fore-go getting a Power PC & Cooling 1 Kilo Watt power supply and an additional XFX Geforce 7950 GX2 and using my OCZ Powerstream 520 Watt power supply. Getting the Conroe and not getting the items listed above my system configuration would look like this:

ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard
(4) Mushkin 512mb PC5300 DDR2 3-3-3-10
XFX Geforce 7950 GX2 PCI-Express
Creative SB X-Fi
(3) Western Digital 200gb SATA-150 hard drives
Lite-on DVD-RW/CD-RW
Pioneer DVD-ROM
Netgear WG311 PCI wireless card
Antec Sonata-II case

Do you think the Powerstream 520 will be enough to power all of this? I don't know how the power consumption of the Conroe will be compaired to my current AMD 4400+ (939). Also I plan on getting another XFX Geforce 7950 GX2 in the future when support for Quad SLi comes out. Do you think that the OCZ will be able to support all of that or will I have to look into something more powerful?

Thanks in advance for the input.

ugh wait, is the Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 965 Presler 1066MHz and the Conroe the same CPU? Because I was looking at the Intel PEE 965 Presler from Newegg.com and thats what I was thinking of buying.

phew! thank god I asked. I guess I will be going with either an FX2 or 4600 AM2 at this point, but I still need to know which one is faster and if its worth the extra 400 bucks.
