Hi all,
I am wondering what advantages i will see by upgrading from 3yrs old amd athlon II x4 635 to intel ivy bridge quad core?

I use my desktop for routine stuff.movies, browsing and all.

Shall I switchover ?

Thanks.

It would be quite significant, but if you aren't really pushing your CPU now then you won't notice much of a difference. A better upgrade would be adding an SSD for your OS, and possibly more RAM.

Not much, especially for light usage as you've specified. I do agree that SSD is a better upgrade. Having used 2 PCs with almost similar CPU performance, one with a SSD and one without, the responsiveness is greatly improved. 128GB is plenty with some games in it but I suggest 256GB ones just because they're cheaper than/similar to when I bought my first 128GB.

For that type of usage no. If you would to do some CPU heavy stuff then the answer would be yes .

Since you already have an ssd, I would wait for Kaveri and Core i3 Haswell, i believe they will be the best for what you do with your PC.

That should be fast enough, frankly. If you're really itching for an upgrade, you could always buy a better cooler (Hyper 212 EVO gets good reviews) and overclock that Athlon.

I agree with others. With your usage scenarios and current setup I see 0 reason to change something.

Upgrading to a Phenom II X6 would give you additional snappiness at minimal cost. That's the biggest difference I saw when upgrading my 635 to a 1045T, but overclocking the 1045T stomps all over the 635.

You may even be able to do a FX 4300 or 6300 even though they aren't listed on the CPU support list. The 4300 would be much better than the 635, and the 6300 would be a nicer upgrade over the Phenom II X6.

Honestly cant you already Watch movies fluently?
and do so while browseing the web at the same time as well (if you feel like it?).

From that perspective the "gains" would be so small you wouldnt notice it.

Unless you do something that needs more CPU umpf, there really is very little reason to upg.

I agree, their is zero incentive and movie playback improved after adding gfx card.
Previously,it used to stutter with 1080p for no reason but gfx card solved it.plus it made windows 8 also far more snappier.

Will continue using this and may take phenom x6 if i find damn hot deal.

Will shelve the plan to upgrade to ivy bridge.

You could always try a Phenom II X4 960T- they can unlock to an X6, with a bit of luck.

Actually, unlocking is a good idea, provided your 635 is Deneb based:

"Propus" (C2/C3, 45 nm, Quad-core)
Propus is a native quad-core die design with no disabled cores, based on Deneb without L3 cache. Some processors that report themselves as Propus are actually Deneb cores with disabled L3 cache. No official reason has been given for the mixing, although speculated to be for market demand or defective L3 cache. Deneb Athlons have a code of CACYC.

You can always try to unlock the L3 cache using Advanced Clock Calibration, and if you can you'll effectively have a Phenom II X4. More info here, and unlocking example here.

Install a RAM drive of 2 to 3 GB based on your 8GB RAM size. It's free. Easy to setup. You can use it to migrate all your Windows TEMP & TMP [temp storage files], & 1GB browser cache, & windows virtual memory of 1GB if you don't want to deactivate it. An SSD is fast, but it is in order of magnitude slower compared to a RAM drive.

Since your motherboard has 6 SATA III ports & capable of raid 0/1/5/10, I would acquire another Samsung 130 64gb, or 2 130s to run raid 0/5.

If you're still not satisfied, then a new ivy bridge/haswell system in the future.

Reviving my old thread .
Finally my pc conked off and has no video output. I tried both gfx card output and motherboard output. System fails to boot.

So i finally decided to uograde to whole new motherboard and cpu combo instead of troubleshooting 2011 build.

I think intel should be good choice.

What would you suggest.

Thanks.

1) budget?
2) have your usage patterns changed? (eg play more games? do more video editing? etc.)

going by regular prices i5 4440 and b85 board should be $250, it's probably a good solution,

unless you really want a new VGA and want to search for some good deals on cheap CPU+MB combos or used stuff with the same money...

I see no point in recommending a 4440 when a 4590 is $10 more.

The very cheapest Intel mobo with 6 SATA ports I can find is the ECS B85H3-M v1.0 at $45.50.

If you want all the SATA ports to be 6GB/s, then you'll need to step up to the ASRock H97M Anniversary.
