AMD 64 3200+ 1600 FSB?!

its not a typo,thats its theoretical internal bus speed, on paper. its quad pumped ddr 400. it really just runs at 400 but internally it can run at a fsb of 1600, its just a number.

Umm no.

Its single channel DDR 400, which operates at 200Mhz. The Athlon 64s no longer have a FSB, just a HT link between the ram and on-die memory controller. I think the 1600 is still a typo, though.

umm, 1600 fsb is correct. any website you look at the 64 processors 3200+ and higher (not 3000+), you'll see that it is 1600 fsb. Think of it this way, intel posts their times as 800, correct? well the 64 line is the same thing (as aka1nas was saying about the hyper transport) but posts the ddr2 timings which are 1600. the real time is 800, the ddr timing is 1600. Perhaps.

AMD themselves refer to the HT link as running at 800MHz, which is correct. But in reality it's running at 800MHz DDR (which you can make 1600MHz out of, but AMD decided not to for some reason). The HT link connects the CPU to the northbridge which only contains the AGP port nowadays since the memory controller is on the CPU. The HT link is bi-directional, 16-bit wide at 800Mhz DDR for a total of 3.2GB/s bandwidth in each direction (6.4GB/s combined).

Look. HT is extremely scalable... however...

The Athlon-64 has a 16-bit HT link to the memory. It has 3.2 GB/s bandwidth between the memory controller and the memory.

The Athlon-64 FX and Opteron have TWO 16-bit HT links to the memory. It has 6.4 GB/s bandwidth between the memory controllers and the memory.

The 1600 Mhz is referring to the connection between the CPU and the memory controller because they don't mention that it's double data rate and they seem to be trying to carry the socket 462 nomenclature over to socket 754 and 940 and 939, which isn't always correct since the FSB was always the connection from the CPU to EVERYTHING else on the motherboard... now the FSB they're referring to is strictly the connection from the CPU to the memory.

16 bits twice per clock cycle (double data rate) = 4 bytes per clock cycle
800 mhz = 800,000,000 cycles per second
4 x 800,000,000 = 3,200,000,000 bytes per second = 3.2 GB/s

DDR RAM has a 64 bit data bus and is double data rate
PC3200...
64 bits twice per clock cycle (cause it's double data rate) = 16 bytes per clock cycle
200 Mhz = 200,000,000 cycles per second
16 x 200,000,000 = 3,200,000,000 bytes per second = 3.2 GB/s

I'm sorry Jeff but this is also wrong. Here is what the page actually says:

Specifications:

Processor Speed: 2.0GHz
Cache Size: 1MB

System Bus: 1600MHz

Fan: Not Included

Depending on the time of day and the weather etc, people refer to the HT links as system busses, FSB, PSB, etc. But they all mean the same thing. The HT link between the CPU and chipset. It doesn't mean it's the correct terms to use, but it is what people tend to call it.

The connection on the CPU to memory controller is running at 2GHz in this case, since it is running at core speed. It is also 64-bit wide by the way. Calling that an FSB is wrong IMHO. FSB means Front Side Bus and it was coined when there was also a Back Side Bus (from the CPU to the module L2 cache starting with the PII). There is no front to this bus since it's internal. FSB was originally a marketting term used by Intel to describe the difference between the Pentium MMX and Pentium 2. But I don't think even they thought the term would stick around for so long and describe so many different things to people

Errr... I swear I remember reading that the connection between the memory controller and the rest of the CPU was a HT link... I could be wrong, or what I read could be wrong
