Setup
'
AMD 64 3500+ Socket 939 running at 2.3ghz
1gb OCZ PC 3500 RAM in Dual Channel
80GB HD On fresh windows install.
X800 XT PE (Sapphire) running on stock.

I am having issues while playing both HL2 and Coutner-Strike source. My FPS are averaging at 40ish when other with same setup litterally getting 2x or 3x this. I am seeing massive slow downs at points and I believe this is cpu related. I am scoreing insanly low on 3dMark when it comes to CPU testing read below. I have included all information below that I would think would be relivent below. Please ANY assistance would be greatly welcome! Please assist me in salvaging my gaming machine!

When referring to the 3dmark03 scores its strictly the CPU score I am scoring 200.

Low FPS I am referring to is 20 and it does not matter what setting the graphics are set to which I assume is the CPU issue.

I am using a Thermaltake 480W Power Supply Unit.

Motherboard I am using is hte Gigabyte GA-KNS Ultra-939

Per CPU-Z my ram settings are as followed

DDRAM 512X2|OCZ PC3500 433M (my apologizes its not 3700 is 3500)

Channels: Dual

Frequency 209 mhz
FSBRAM CPU/11.0
Cas Latency is 2.5 clocks
RAS and CAS delay 4clocks
RAS Precharge 3 clocks
Cycle Time 7 clocks
Bank Cycle Time 11 clocks
Dram Idle Timer 16 clocks

I doubt its CPU related. Its likely mobo driver or video card driver related. Make sure they are installed and up to date.

You're suffering from the same malady I have.."AMD hype". I just built a box:

AMD Athlon 64 4000+
1 Gig Kingston HyperX PC3200 dual channel
BFG OC'ed (375 Mhz) Nvidia 6800GT 256 Mb (66.83 drivers)
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum

I built it for online racing, using Nascar Racing 2003. The framerate on this AMD lemon is 40% lower than with my Pentium 3.0c Northwood Box (w/1 gig cheap pc3200 ram).

700 bucks for this piece of crap. AMD? never again

edit: how these guys at anandtech benchmark these things with AMD the fastest every time is beyond me...kickbacks?

I will post my scores soon I am working so I can't get to my PC. As for my resolution I am running a step above 800x600 I think its like 1024x768.

I have update all drivers and nothing seems to work. I will again post my 3dmark scores as soon as I can.

Dude, you must be doing something wrong. It's not your processor that's lettin you down. It's not only anandtech that benches the AMDs higher than the intels.

Yeah, your both doing something wrong. As to what, I dunno. Install latest bios and chipset drivers. Alot of people forget chipset drivers.

It does seem likely that it has something to do with the BIOS and/or chipset drivers. Make sure that a) Cool N' Quiet is disabled, b) that CPUZ is reporting the correct speed of your processor and c) that your chipset drivers are up to date.

I am sure its something I am doing wrong I just gotta figure it out. I have hte latest chipset and bios on my mobo and I don't OC my Vid card. I will go ahead and underclock the proc tonight and run some of the tests. I do apprec all the assistance this forum has brought I will keep you posted and I will make sure Cool and Quiet is History!

In my bios I have a setting stating Fan Controlled by CPU can you just let me know if this is the Cool and Quiet setting. I am 99.9% that this is but I wanted to make sure.

Again, if you have any tips you can also email me at TroyBSolo@alltel.net and I would be grateful!.

PS working sucks have any PayPal questions let me know

1gb dual channel kinston ram at 204mhz 2.5-3-3-8-1t
xfx 6800gt at 380/1000
160gb sata barracuda
480w antech trueblue

3dmark03: 12008
1600x1200 high quality doom3 timedemo1 68.9fps

you are doing something wrong for sure, either cool 'n quiet (btw it is not called fan controlled by cpu) its called cool n quiet or chipset drivers installed wrong

GA-K8NS Ultra-939 is my Mother Board. Running Version F4 Bios.

I do not see this Cool and Quiet setting. And I have flashed my Bios correctly I have double, triple checked them.

What menu is the Cool and Quiet setting under? I was under the assumption it would be under PC Health.

cool n quiet will not be under pc health... check advanced options or basicly just check everywhere else for it how about checking the manual for your mobo under bios ? as for the cpu-z thing with bus speed thats normal

I'll take a look it just has been hectic I thank you all for all of the assistance and patience with this AMD 64 nub. I will hopefully have time to look at the computer after getting some sleep, ever try messinig with a computer being up for 34 hours? Well I wouldn't recommend it!

I will let you know tonight after I check my bios settings if the cool and quiet was the issue.

You should tell us everything under cpu-z, or post a pic of it so we can exactly what it is reporting, like core speed, multiplier, HTT, L1 and L2 caches, voltages and all that. Also, have you checked to see if your prime 95 stable or ran memtest to check memory? And what are your cpu temps? If its like 80 celsius or something obviously thats bad. If none of that helps, be prepared to do a big long list of every setting in your bios and I'll let you know what should be set to what and stuff. Hopefully you want have to RMA anything.

You're right. I was doing something wrong! Right now I'm on cloud 9, d/led the 5.06 nforce system drivers from MSI...what can I say, my framerate improved by 200% lol.
So, I guess the Athlon 64 IS da bomb!! Thanks to the folks in this thread who suggested updated chipset drivers (if I even had them installed in the first place, I might not have).
Oh...apologies to the techs for the kickback remark

I know.. 3.6ghz p4 is not even faster than 3500, blah for that matter 3.46ee p4 is not faster than 3500. rofl.. does intel have anything even acceptable for gaming anymore ? rofl. My 3500+ is at 2.45ghz and I know there is no p4 out there that can touch it, apart from some of the nicely oced ones.. I would guess they need to be at 4.0+ to match speed on a64 at 2.45ghz for gaming performance though.
