Im about to order one and I have a couple questions. Whats the best board out for it right now? I hear the Asus is the best but id like to hear from some people who actually own it. What heatsink/fan combo are you using? What kind of overclocks have you been getting? Finally, which is the best registered ram out right now? Thanks!

I don't own one, and some people hate Tomshardware, but they have a review up with 8 boards, and the MSI came out on top with the ASUS second I think. At least I would read it, even if you hate Tom, just for some more info.

Woah you going for the expensive version right now. Especially since the an A64 3200+ and Asus K8V motherboard together costs less than just the A64FX-51 .

as i know asus makes great boards of great quality, but customer service sucks completely, took half a year to rma one of my boards when i broke a mouse port. But, if you take care of it, then it is a great performer, excellent stability, and has a cool company name.

nForce3-150 is slower than the K8T800 due to a bad design with one of the hypertransport channels . So that narrows it down to the Asus SK8V or MSI K8T for 940.

Toms seems to really love their major advertiser, MSI. They made the MSI i865 board the Editor's (paid?) Choice over the Abit IS7 even though most anyone (including Anandtech's review) will agree the Abit offers better performance and value.

Notice how I qualified that. Again, read it for any important info. It is at least less biased than the manufacturers website. I do like Abit and ASUS though, and have only had one MSI and had problems with it.

These are nowhere near the same chips. The FX-51 is superior. But yes it costs much more.

They are suppose to come out early Q1 of 2004, so I am hoping sometime in mid January. They will most likely call it the fx-53.

The only draw back is that the 939 pin is a new configuration and I believe they will be on next gen boards, but don't quote me on this. It just means more money:evil:, and time for boards to come out.

All I know is Im never going to order another MSI motherboard.... Every one Ive had since the days of the first gen athlons has had some problem or another. Never a problem with ASUS boards. And this wasnt even overclocking, running at stock speeds trying to get the damn thing to work.

Hopefully the more money that is spent on the board is less then the amount spent on buying registered memory. With the new chip using unregistered memory does that mean that the on chip memory controller will be dropped? I hope not, that this a major point of going with the FX51.

Nforce3 boards are superior to the VIA offering, so dont let them change your mind.

The Asus board is junk. Nothing but problems. Get the MSI or Gigabye offering.

BTW... I have the Gigabyte Nforce3 in my FX system.

i just received my machine (shown below) just last night. you can read all the comparisons that you want (as i did prior to purchasing my cpu), but at the end of the day, it's a damn fine cpu and motherboard that i chose. i didn't have to wait til the next socket/mobo to be released, and all of that for not having to buy registered memory. the computer is absolutely stunning, and what it's able to do in terms of running games is even that much more phenomenal. i'm seeing stuff in the games that i had never before (p4 2.4, geforce 4600ti) and they are running at lightspeeds even at max quality. so, what am i trying to say? i haven't read any real complaints about the nforce 3 150 board, and yes, SIS received some wonderful reviews. at this level of the game (technology), you can't go wrong with any of the boards that are out there, and yes, some are better than others, but most all smoke all p4 3.2 configs at the moment.

good luck with your machine.

the asus board is the oldest one around. well for the fx anyways.

i dont know how the nforce3 boards can possibly be better thought. they have that hypertransport 600mhz thing , which in some cases makes 3d performance slow. also they have to have a pci serial ata chip unlike the via ones that have it on board.

that said i have a gigabyte board also, but the k8vt800m kt800 socket 754 one with my athlon 64.

socket 939 i would be willing to bet does not come out until february. for one thing they dont need to rush it, not to mention there were no socket 939 board sightings at comdex. and yes socket 939 needs motherboards.

supposedly they can use the same chipsets, as hypertransport is a common protocol. i'm actually thinking that id' be possible to run a non x86 processor with a amd 64 chipset if it uses hypertransport as its bus protocol.

i remember in the k7 days, there was a digital ev6 alpha board that could run k7's with a bios update.
