what steppings are people getting from which vendors? it looks like the brand-new Winchesters are not doing nearly as well as the week 41-48

I got a week 51 from Monarch last week. It was an OEM 3200+, but I haven't tweaked it yet so I don't know what it will do quite yet.

Newegg

Chiefvalue

Check these two links. They are the same company. I won't pay any extra money to newegg now when I can get the same product and same service for less from Chiefvalue.

The OEM 3200+ looks rather tempting... Would it be a good upgrade from a P4 running at 3.2GHz in i865PE-based mobo?

Not really.

But overclocked to 3800+ speeds it definitely is.

What are the chances of getting it up to 3800+ speed, and what sort of a motherboard would i need for that?

PS: I would prefer a board with an AGP slot - already have a Radeon X800.

I do hate to see such raw inefficiency,

He-he. When I read that, I thought of King Schwemmel.

Me wonders how many of us you would sacrifice to charge your boomsticks?

Well, getting to 2.4Ghz should be no problem with a 3200+ and the Neo2 Platinum or DFI nF3 mobos would work, both do a good job from what I've seen. Good luck!

Have you tried aftermarket cooler?

not yet.... but my temps are not high (<50C at full load), so I'm not sure if it will help ? cpu is running on 1.58V which is the max voltage that this board allows. Maybe I just got an average overclocker ? or maybe with more voltage/better cooler it could go higher ? i was disappointed as I hoped for 2.6 ghz at least, but still performance is quite good

Pretty easy actually if you assume that 2500MHz is equivalent to a 3800+. These processors easily reach 2500MHz as a matter of routine. However I have to warn you that a few people were not able to exceed 2350, but those reports and few and far between. I guess you already know that overclocking is always a chance, but the odds seem really good with these Winchesters.

In fact I can run 2660MHz with my 3200+. Some people would argue that is around 4000+ speeds. If you really want to be sure you can wait for the E stepping coming out soon. Those are supposed to be able to overclock even better than the shipping Winchesters.

As for motherboard see I think the ASUS, DFI, and MSI Nforce boards will all handle it. In fact even the really cheap Chaintech will if you mod it a little (add fan to NB cooler).

Also, I have to add that using an aftermarket cooler makes the difference between 2350-2400 limits and 2500-2700 limits (assuming you got lucky to see the high end of that).

thanks, based on what you said, I just ordered the thermaltake A1838 venus silent boost K8 cpu cooler, and will try to improve my current overclock (~2375) to 2500-2700 hopefully. But I don't want to get my hopes up too much cause I might be disapointed yet again....

Just wanted to point out that both 3800+ and 4000+ run at 2400 mhz stock, only difference is that 4000+ has 1MB L2 cache (vs 512KB for all the other winchesters). So if you overclock to 2500 mhz you are in fact running a faster system than a 4000+ system at stock, also because the memory in your overclcoked system is probably running well above the stock 200.

as I understand it, when I replace the stock cpu HSF with an aftermarket HSF, I will be voiding the 3-year warranty on my retail version cpu, and revert to the 90-day oem cpu warranty, correct ?
