I can verify that my Nitro+ can boost to around 3 GHz or a bit above, at stock settings. [...] at times games may crash unless I underclock a bit. Maybe future drivers will help with a more stable boosting algorithm.
This reads like the card is not stable at stock settings.

Possibly, though I am not sure it is the card itself, as I already had it replaced with an RMA. So that would seem to leave PSU and software issues as far as culprits, and my PSU should be plenty.

I will say the RDNA3 drivers have come a long way, but I don't think they are quite flushed out yet, not completely.

I will agree that the price in EU is not as good as in US against the RTX4070. But comparing a just released 7800XT vs a 4 months released 4070 prices is not correct. Lets see how prices will be 1-2 months from now. Also , 50Watts more is not going to brake any electricity bills , even with EU prices.

plus more noise and heat and all listed ones are 3 fan models which don't fit my case. Yeah, there will be 2 fan models but the more power use has more issues than just price. over 3 years my estimate says it will be a tie price-wise between the 4070 and 7800 xt.

When has the cost of power ever increased by 50% in one year? Maybe it has somewhere, but I find that hard to believe. An even better question is, how do "we already know" it will? Are you a time traveler?
Well that is how it works here. Prices are set for the year and it's publicly announced. Power market is not liberalized here you have no choice, you get the provider that happens to be the provider were you live. So certain "luck" factors in as there are pretty big differences, in some cases town 1 mile away will pay a lot less.

it works that these providers buy the power 1-3 years in advance. Since this is Europe and power costs were sky high last year, the effect was delayed to 2024 and 2025.

I would like to see some undervolting results and the resulting reduction in power consumption for 7800XT.
After 3 years I want to see how big handicap is only 12GB Vram for RTX 4070.

My Nitro+ will sustain 3+ but takes roughly 500w.
I find that reducing power budget and undervolting slightly can help a lot with that, and still keep similar, or at least reasonably good clocks. Something to play around with perhaps, either in the Radeon software or in MSI Afterburner.

I suggest you knock the clock speed down 200Mhz and see if the crashes still happen. If they do, it's probably the game. If not, WIN.

Yeah that's what I do and so far so good, I think I have the core set to 2800 MHz now.

And what about power consumption vs default settings?
I don't remember the actual power consumption at load (would have to test and actual value might vary a bit) but I have the power limit at -2% right now and the core at -10mV.

It wasn't just a rumour but an official AMD slide. There really was a graph showing 30% higher clockspeed or 1/2 power consumption compared to RDNA2.

Just means the rumors were well-founded. Even if they're based on official internal company projections or plans, those can turn out to be wrong.

The Sapphire Nitro+ RX7800XT although it is a three fan design is quitter than many dual fan RTX4070 designs like the ASUS Dual.

Ok if you have a small case thats another thing, as for the 3 years time, I have a feeling the 16GB of the 7800XT will make the card much more future proof.

I am considering the PowerColor Hell Hound. Or Red Devil (regular, non-oc). I am not planning on overclocking. Is 2 fan Hell Hound quiet enough, if quit operation is priority, or should I go with 3 fan Red Devil?

Edit: both seem sold out at my MicroCenter and Newegg at this time.

There is a 2 fan Hellhound? The one I might pull the trigger on is 3 fan. I am not seeing any 2 fan models for either the 7700 or 7800 series on Powercolor's site. https://www.powercolor.com/products?id=1492658578&type=1492667495&page=1

Thanks, I think I got myself confused. By wishful thinking, perhaps.

I was looking at the 2 fan AMD reference cards and then typed Hellhound in MicroCenter search box, and by then 7800 XT was sold out and it showed me a 7600 <facepalm>

Still, I was hoping to avoid getting a big case. I would prefer a slightly smaller case, maybe MicroATX mobo (if I can find one with mATX with 650E). I wonder if I should then get the AMD reference or the Asrock card.

But then again, silent operation is a priority...

You don't need a big case to fit a big card. My ginormous XFXView attachment 85678 RX 6800 fit in my CoolerMaster NR200, just barely, but it fit.
That case requires an ITX board which in itself is a significant premium especially outside US..

Take it from experience building a SFF PC, there are a vanishingly small set of MATX SFF cases which fit 3-fan GPUs...

The Asus AP201 cases are nice. They're usually only about $80 too. There might not be a ton of options out there for cases like this but the AP201 is definitely a good one. It seems to fly under the radar a bit.

The ASUS Prime AP201 is a stylish 33-liter MicroATX case with tool-free side panels and a quasi-filter mesh, with support for 360 mm coolers, graphics cards up to 338 mm long, and standard ATX PSUs.

If we just change the conceit and give up on it being a "small case" then sure, that case wouldn't fit where I put my build now and is around double the volume...
