I'm not one who is too excited about PCI-E but AGP is going pretty much dead. I bet you that with the next generation of graphic cards, you'll only be able to buy the mainstream cards for AGP. All of the gamer cards (equiv of 6800GT's or better now), I'm expecting, will be PCI-E only. Personally, I would rather wait for rev2 of the SLI boards, though.

The point I'm making is why would you buy an AGP board at this point in time? AGP is dead. What a waste to build an awesome new rig and not be able to buy a new video card for it a year from now.

I seriously doubt ATI & Nvidia are going to be totally PCI-E with their next cards. That would severely limit the market of their cards.

Other than SLI, what is the advantage of PCI-E over AGP? I'd rather buy a proven motherboard with a good track record than be a guinea pig with a new NF4 chipset just for PCI-E.

pci-e can go up to 16x whereas agp is stuck at 8x.
Don't get me wrong - I'm *not* an expert on the subject but I've always read the real world speed difference between AGP 8x and AGP 4x is next to nothing. Are there any benchmarks available that put a same speed PCI-E card up against an AGP card? I'd be curious to see if PCI-E wins by a significant amount.

I've got a AGP version BFG 6800GT in my rig now. I've also got a .90 AMD64 3200+ 939pin CPU & Thermaltake XP-90 in my closet. I don't have a motherboard for my 3200+ yet and I'm leaning toward going with either the MSI or Asus board (both AGP) just because I already have an AGP card and the boards are proven. I'm also considering selling the CPU & HS/F combo and waiting. Right now I'm on the fence...

I'm wondering if I should sit on that fence with you!
I was about to plunk down for the 3500+ and Asus A8V so I WOULD have AGP capability with all my AGP GeForces. You folks have me confused now.
I am not a hardcore gamer and will not be trying to find a justification for a dual SLI setup. I just want a fast AMD setup to upgrade from a slow Athlon XP. Any thoughts?

While I'm asking, is there a link to an A64 overclocking article, or is it unlocked and just tweaking the BIOS timings is all that is needed?

$402 is not a bundle discount from zzf. I bought them both individually from them @ regular price a couple weeks ago for $403 shipped.

I've seen benchmarks comparing the 2 (AGP 8x and PCIe) and there is like a .5% lead with the PCIe!!!!!! WOW, doesnt that deserve $100+ more of my money?!?!?!?!?!

i feel bad in starting this into a pci-e vs agp thread.
for ME all im saying is that im trying to wait for nforce4 (because its so close)
and seems to be where video cards are heading (all tho right now the speed difference
between pci-e and agp is minimal). it would not be logical to build a box built around agp
today and expect to be able to use it for 2 years when a year from now when you want
to upgrade your video card only to find out pci-e is your only route for a new fast video card.
Of course no1 can predict the future and im not trying to. its just my opinion and the logic im using
to hold off to january/feb to build a new box.

Even the current cards from ATI are vertiully impossible to find in AGP versions. You are right in that the parts that are available right at this moment don't show a performance difference between the AGP and PCI-e versions, the problem is, there just aren't going to be new high end cards available in AGP. Check Anands latest video card articles (like the HL2 benches and the new priceguide, you'll see what I'm talking about).

Supposedly there are boards out (or going to be out) with both AGP and PCI-e, Does anyone know if there will be a nForce 4 version of this? I ask because I have my AthlonXP 3200+ setup with a BFG 6800GT. I can't justify upgrading my CPU for a while as it is still an extrememly adequate setup. When I look to upgrade (next fall maybe) I hope to be able to retain my recently purchased 6800GT.

This A64 3500, is this the currently price/performance sweet spot with the AMDS now? or is there a better one, I am hearing 3000+ oc to 3500...

I was curious about the sweet spot, too. The price diff. between 3000 and 3500 seems too great and everyone says they should both OC easily to about the same output, with a good savings for the 3000 part. If OC'ed, would anyone buy the retail box 3000 and use the included fan? Otherwise, what is the favored HSF used for these A64s?

I just can't agree (totaly disagree) with this from a business point of view. There are literally hundreds of thousand's/millions of AGP MB's out there. I really do not think ATI & Nvidia are not going to lose sales of high end cards that are possible (percentage wise) for those MB's. NO WAY IM( business) O
