So if i understand you correctly, Undersea, if my CPU has a max operating temperature of 70 C, and your CPU is running at 30C, the thermal margin would be 40 in Overdrive?

I've been searching the same information. I recently built my son a new rig (sub $300) and he has the A10-7700K. I'm currently running @ 4.1 & 960 on the GPU. Running Passmark BurnIn Test with overdrive up it's showing a Thermal Margin of roughly 28C.

I'm still not sure exactly what this means. Can anyone elaborate?

In principle you have 28°C margin left before the silicon max temp is reached, at this max temp the CPU will eventualy throttle, this max temp is set by AMD, dont know how much it is for a 7700K, this can surely be found with a google search.

Thermal margin is super inaccurate as long as there is a lot of room.

As soon as you get close to a margin of 25° it gets super accurate, though.

So if your page says that a margin of 70-60° is left then your CPU is so cold that it can't pick up a proper reading.

If as soon as it has 25° left it should start showing rather accurate and sensical temperature movements.

Basically you don't need to worry about that value at all as long as it's nowhere near 0°

If it's near 0° you either have a shitty/broken cooler or didn't apply something correctly. That said...the 7700K is not exactly a heat monster...even with decent overclocks it will be unlikely that you get close to this margin even during summertime. (Unless your room heats up to 45+°C)

According to CPU-World the max temp of the 7700k is 72.4C

I appreciate all the insight. I may toy with it some more to see what speed I can get out of it on stock cooling. I have no plans of changing out the stock cooler so I know at the very least what I've OC to will run with no problems.

If it works along the same lines as Intels Thermal Margin then it is based on temperature and power.

For example a 50W load with temperature at 80C might give a TM of 20 while a 25W load at 80C might give a TM of 10.

A negative value means the cooling is fighting a losing battle.
