Wonder what's under the hood as far as CPU?

AMD Announces Project Quantum
by btarunr Tuesday, June 16th 2015 12:51
AMD announced Project Quantum, what it claims to be the most powerful small form-factor gaming PC. About the size of a gaming console, and designed entirely by AMD, using AMD components, this machine packs two AMD "Fiji" graphics processors, with 8 GB of graphics memory, set in CrossFire, and an AMD 64-bit x86 machine. All hot components are liquid-cooled. The desktop will be marketed by AMD AIB partners, and will offer 60 FPS on any game at 4K resolution. Leveraging Windows 10 and DirectX 12, the machine will ship out a little later this year. More details soon.

They might sell 4 of these IF they came with Intel inside.

It must be a special binned FX. The 860/870k would completely choke feeding two Fiji's... but then again, so would any FX

Would AMD use an intel processor in their GPU technology showcase?

From the pictures it looks like an Intel CPU to me.

Its not a form factor. Its just a custom box with custom board etc. And nobody else will use anything similar.

Could just be a mockup, of course. None of the connectors seem to match the holes in the case. Custom rear panel daughter PCB, maybe?

At least the board is MiniITX. I just wonder why they made that space between the 2 parts. Looks more trouble than good.

Why have the two halves? Well, it looks cool for one. It would also give a low restriction air pathway for the radiator. You could probably do the same with a cube that has the components in the bottom, vents around the sides and the rad/fan at the top. Would look weird though.

From the looks of it, the bottom half is the computer and the top half is a radiator housing.

The gap is for airflow and the tubing runs through the center hub.

That seems to be an OPTERON!
WTF AMD!
Unless.... you want to launch the Opteron FX as the last FX before Zen?

Using Intel X86 cpu is suicidal, but not the rest of the components.

There's no problem in using Intel in the PC. Just advertise it uses, or at least don't advertise it uses AMD, in the case.

Seems I read they used to recommend in the press kit the use of Intel CPU's with recent GPU's. Wonder how separated the two departments are these days? NObody that buys a prebuilt is gonna care anyway as long as it works.

AMD is well known to use Intel CPU's for benchmark purposes when comparing to nVidia GPU's. They don't want to gimp their own GPU results by using their own CPU's.

Without a price tag and the inability to upgrade the thing I'm not interested.

This, even moreso. This entire product is meant as a highlight of the Fiji GPUs. Besides the lower performance of the AMD CPUs in gaming, every extra watt an AMD CPU would use is a watt they can't use in the GPUs.

The intel cpu is just a pragmatic choice, using an FX would seriously hurt performance. I like it.

Looks like they're sandwitching a waterblock between the fiji gpu's and the cpu if you look at the layout of the lan port and gpu outputs on the case. Neat.

big powerbrick though, to be expected.

If they're gunning for a VR living room box, they'll need to offer it in different color with Apple Like Gloss appeal to win over living room space.

I'd replace that tacky looking AMD logo on the top too. Needs branding like Fury except Fury isn't something you put on the living room. A simple elegant Q for Quantum would suffice.

Not sure I like the external PSU. Seems like a SFF like those from Velocity Micro would take up less room than two separate boxes like this.
