AMD Athlon® XP 2700+ Bare CPU W/ ECS N2U400-A Mainboard vs. SEMPron 2800+ w/nvidia mobo

I'm so confused. Can somebody please tell me which is faster?

the XP 2700 will be faster. The ECS board is Nvidia based, so they're most likely the same for both. The XP's rating is geared more towards P4s whereas the Sempron's is geared towards Celerons, so even though the Sempron's rating is higher, the XP will be faster.

I've read that the semprons are rebadged athlonXPs so wouldnt this mean that a sempron 2800+ out performed the AthlonXP 2700+

btw. they're both the same price!

Yes the Semprons are rebadged Athlon XPs, but they use a different naming scheme on each, observe.

Sempron 2800+ 2.0GHz, 256KB L2 cache (Whips a 2.8GHz Celeron into submission)
Athlon XP 2700+ 2.17GHz, 256KB L2 cache (Comparable to a 2.7GHz P4)

At equal clock speeds, a Pentium 4 will walk all over, beat, flog, and torturously kill a Celeron, so the same pretty much holds true for equally numbered Semprons and Athlon XPs.

Wow. Well if thats the case. Should I go for a Pentium 4 2.4 GHZ (1MB cache, 533 MHZ) bare CPU with MOBO for $109. Thats 10 dollars more than the athlonXP 2700+. This my first time buildiing a comp. Thanks for the info MDE

The Athlon XP will be noticeably faster than the Pentium 4. You're getting a decent motherboard with the Athlon and probably crap with the P4. I'd save the money and get the Athlon.

from tom's hardware guide it the sempron also runs at 333Mhz FSB but with less with L1 128kb k2 256kb running at 2.0 Ghz

They're essentially the same CPU, but the Sempron is a bit slower. You could compare the Sempron 2800+ to an Athlon XP 2600+. Both would be faster than the P4 you are now considering.

athlonXP and Sempron are both the same price 99.99. I think they sempron has a better mobo tho

If the Sempron was a retail box (with a heatsink and AMD warranty) then you didn't really get jipped, and honestly, you probably wouldn't notice the speed difference. The ECS N2U400-A is based on an Nvidia chipset (nForce2) and is probably what you got with the Sempron.
