The ABIT board will overclock like a dream. The ECS can do a modest overclock with a hacked bios Hacked BIOS

The ECS is a little tempermental to your power supply. Make sure you have a halfway decent one.

The ABIT requires DDR memory, the ECS can run SDR or DDR, making it cheaper if you have some SDR you want to move to the new machine.

The ECS also has built in NIC and sound, saving a few more pennies.

The ABIT has a built in RAID controller, in case you want to run multiple hard drives....

I run two machines of each, and have no complaints on any of them.

BTW, if you get the ECS, make sure you get the updated manual from their website. The diagram showing the connections (power, speaker, HD LED, reset, etc) is WRONG. If you follow it, you may think you have a dead motherboard, 'cause nothing will work!

Thanks guys for all the help.
I'm going with the ECS K7S5A since I already have some sdram and still need sound and nic.

Kwan - I would check out the Enlight 7250 @ Newegg for $59 shipped or the Antec 630II for $73 shipped from Staples using a coupon... both nice cases... I prefer the looks of the Enlight over the Antec but the Antec has a better internal design and overall build quality is better...

CableLoco - I heard ABS owns newegg and nutrend... not sure if it's true or not though.

The ABIT board will overclock like a dream

I am setting this chip up on an Abit KG7 also. I can crank up the FSB to 166, but I don't see an option for 5:5:1 divider, just 3:3:1 and 4:4:1. I thought I had to change to a 5:5:1 divider to clock it that high??? Or do I leave it at 4:4:1 and keep my fingers crossed? I have PC2100 RAM and the latest BIOS.

I got the same thing (AROIA)....asked about it in a thread in the CPU forum and people replied that it usually overclocks as good as AGOIA cores. Havent got my MB yet (Epox 8RDA+) so I can't say whether it will reach the same speeds. Please post your overclock results before my time runs out to return to newegg. I might not get my MB in time to check it out!

Thanks...

I just ordered one yesterday from Newegg. If it is a AROIA chip then I'll be curious if it does overclock as well as the AGOIA. Here are a couple of overclocking reviews for the Athlon XP 1400+ AROIA.

Review One overclocked to 1.8Ghz (about 2200+).
Review Two is in Italian, so is a little hard to follow. I translated it from Italian to Russian to English and got this:

"We have certifies extreme overclock as for the CENTRAL PROCESSOR 1600, frequency clock 2028Mhz seems veramente spatial processing (addressing) only one 1400Mhz departures. Real earnings was 628Mhz, that one of the big edges(territories) overclocking never visas on section by the way is not Overclock this place. Obviously it is not necessary to forget that we were also extreme overclock the CENTRAL PROCESSOR

After super overclock central processors AMD XP AGOGA 1400 1900Mhz and AGOIA 1467 1936Mhz has arrived the moment to study behaviour of CENTRAL PROCESSOR AROIA. Stepping AROIA should be that following AGOIA as was AGOIA for AGOGA. As we shall see further the CENTRAL PROCESSOR of the present test (proof) has proved to be very much (much) overcloccabile and has arrived with 1905Mhz without the certain problems. Then that can rise with 2Ghz and at last to arrive up to extreme frequency 2028Mhz..."

Sorry about the cheesy translation, but it gives the general idea. Looks like is might still be an okay overclocker.

My AROIA arrived yesterday....set it up on a Shuttle AK32L.

Running at 2100+ right now, default voltage.

Unlocked is well worth the small inconvenience for the extra (free!) performance.

I read that review in Italian. They used water cooling to get past the AROIA past 1.8 GHz. The CPU did it at the default voltage, however.

I suggest STRONGLY to get in on this... I got mine a while ago, and since I had an Alpha 8045 and EPox 8K3A+ laying around, I just threw them all together. No upping the voltage, a very quiet 80mm fan, 1 case fan, and it's running @166FSB no problem. Can't beat that for a ~$50 processor.

Do you guys think this will be able to get up to a 166fsb overclock with an nforce2 mobo and crucial pc2700 ram? I'm planning on putting together a new computer, and this would be a great way to save some money on it (i can always drop in a faster processor later).

Thanks!
