AMD Athlon 64 3500+ overheating

I just recently put together a computer. I rand soltek's software to check fan speed and temperature of the cpu. It tells me the cpu is at 50 degrees celsius which I think is pretty bad for not even overclocking it yet. I put my fan to 6,000 rpm or so and it stayed at 50 degrees celsius and it doesn't change when I put the fan down to 4,000 rpm. Could anyone post possible reasons for this temperature showing this? Or anything I should do to fix it?

Edit:
Thermaltake Venus 12 CPU Cooler For AMD Opteron and Athlon 64, Model "A1744" is the cooling fan I'm using.

I think it's because of bad air circulation inside your case. Please give more information on what your case looks like from the inside.

ok thanks. Is there any cheap device that I could use to check the temperature? I wanna overclock but I'm afraid of it getting to hot, and since I dont have an accureate temperature, I dont wanna risk screwing that over. Also, could someone explain overclocking processors? I saw my friend fiddling with settings and stuff, but I didn't really understand it.

Try overclocking a bit, because my temps were 45/60 idle/load, and when I overclocked from 11x200 to 10x220 (same CPU speed, overclocked memory), my mobo's reported temps went down. Instead of hanging out in the 50's during normal use, my processor hangs out in the upper 40's during normal use. Now I overclocked to 10x230 and the temps are still a bit lower than they were on 11x200. Maybe this is just a mobo glitch, but it nevertheless is promising.

See if your heatsink feels hot while your computer is running. You may have bad heatsink contact, or insufficient thermal grease. If the heatsink it fairly warm, and your grease is on good, you can probably rest assured that your motherboard is just lying to you. Which is a good thing, because if it is idling at 50, there is no telling what kind of number it will give you at overclocked full load!

MunkyTOS,

I've just built a new system, comprising an ASUS A8V, 3500+ and a Zalman Super Flower (CNPS7000B-Cu) and the highest CPU temperature reading I've seen so far is 25°C while gaming (NFSU; FarCry; Doom III).

I'm seeing the exact opposite of your situation... I'm amazed at just how cool this CPU is running, and wondering whether I'm seeing incorrect results leaning the other way -- that the MoBo is reporting too low!! Having said that, the Zalman is a truely awesome cooler, and I can feel that it's fins are barely warm to the touch, even at the slowest fan speed. Zalman's 939 mounting mechanism is pure quality - as I tightened it up, just a tiny amount of Ceramique squeezed out the sides as I applied the final half-turn to mount it, and it just felt perfectly positioned and secure (it has to be -- these things are monsterous!)

I'd tend to agree with Squally Leonharty about case ventilation. I'm seeing about 19-23°C on a CoolerMaster Ali case with 2x80mm intake + 1x80mm rear, with a Tagan PSU helping the exhaust process.
