I want to overclock this bad boy to about 2.7, thats roughly where most users are getting it at...now what I dont know is if they are using stock cooling or aftermarket cooling...Also its a new cpu in a box, so it has a thermal pad on it, do I gotta remove that and put as5 on it or is the thermal pad sufficient enough, along with the stock cooling?
Im sort of new at this overclocking...the rig im on now is a sempron2300(socket a) oc'd to 1900mhz, and I did that just by changing the mhz from 166 to 200...Now with the 3700 how do I overclock that?, do I gotta change multipliers or are they locked on this chip? The mobo is an Asus A8N5X, ram is ocz400512v25 2.5.4.4.8(4 sticks(2Gb) and the psu is an antec smartpower 2.0 400w(im pretty sure thats a dual rail)

Aftermarket cooling. I had an XP-90c, worked like a champ at 2.7 GHz

Mine is at 2.6 with an xp-120 and a panaflo 120mm. Runs around 43C under load. It wasn't stable past 2.65ghz and I wasn't going to push the vcore past 1.525 so I'm happy with it. Good luck.

Mine is running perfectly stabe @2727MHz.Ran Prime95 for about 27 hours,on a stock fan too.I'll probably end up getting a aftermarket heatsink so I can go further.

Mine is currently running @ 2.72 GHz with an XP-90 and a 92mm Ultra speed Panaflo.

I was able to boot into Windows fine at 2.86 GHz, but failed Prime95 within 1 minute. I don't know if it was the processor though that caused the failed Prime, because I found out later that my memory didn't like voltage of 2.75 or higher, which is what I was using. I turned it down to 2.6 volts and everything runs fine. RAM is 1:1, and my processor voltage is 1.5 volts.

I may try pushing my 3700+ further though, I might be able to get more.

Oh and my load temps are between 48C (in games with 100% load), and the highest of 52C (during Prime95).

is there a performance comparison between 3000+ venice and this card, both OCed to same clocks? I've been wondering about this one for a while...

I have my 3700+ running at 2.75 prime stable @ 1.5v with an AC freezer 64 pro. Idle temps are 30, and it loads at 40.

I got into windows at over 2.8, but failed prime, so I may still mess around with it some more.

Two good ol boys were wizzing off a bridge.
One turns to the other, "dang, this water is cold."
Other one responds "yea, and it's deep too."

So now that you've inadvertently polled everyone on their 3700 OC, good luck my friend. Read the links cdjr posted. Remember HT has to stay around 1000. It's a combination of things to oc now, not just a fsb bump. Try to get better than rated timings out of that memory. Memtest is your freind.

Using a VIA K8T890 chipset, so can't tell you much about your Nvidia chipset board, but I have my 3700+ @ 2.81Ghz stable (passed Memtest, Prime 95, and Sandra Lite Burn-in Wizard) with a XP-120 and a Panaflo. Currently idle at 32C, 45C under load.
I used a CPU clock of 255, multiplier of 11, 333 memory divider, and a Vcore of 1.5625v with a CPU Vcore Offset of +200mv.

Set my LDT bus frequency to 1Ghz (5x), which is unique to the K8T890 chipset as it has asynchronous bus architecture. The LDT bus can be set independant of the CPU clock. On your board, you will have to use a LDT bus frequency of 800Mhz (4x) to make a CPU clock of 255 work.

Good luck.

I went with a rather pedestrian overclock of 2500 thats at stock cooling and voltage. Have not felt the need to go any faster.

Your chips multiplier is locked from going up but you can go down. For instance I set my CPU multiplier at 10 so I could use 250FSB to give me an even 2500.

Because I'm running my FSB at 250 I'm using a 4 multiplier on the HTT. The way this works is 4x250=1000 HTT. The way this is labeled in my bios you would select between 1000=5x, 800=4x, 600=3x. You want this number to be as close to a 1000 as you can get it. It would be better to be lower than higher.

The next thing is your memory. My memory wont even think about running at 250 so I have to use a divider the way this setting is labeled in my bios is 200mhz=1:1 would cause my memory to run at 250. 166mhz=6:5 would cause memory to run at 208(this is the one I'm using.) Basically divide your FSB by the first number than multiply that number by the second.

You could try this overclock first its very easy and success rate is gotta be hovering around 100%. After you try this you could always go higher later.

You also might have to set your memory to 2T since you are using 4 DIMMS. If your computer doesnt post this is the first setting I would try.

Good Luck.
