When do you think I can expect prices to drop on AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice before the New Year? So far they haven't budged in maybe 4 months and i don't want to buy right when they drop.?

they are now around $270ish

There isn't much room, for price drops when the prices on those processors are already so low. I mean the cheapest Pentium 4 @ 2.8GHZ/800FSB is 163US. Venice 3000+ is only 149US now, they don't want to look like a bargain CPU manufacturer again.

I don't think you're going to see much of a price drop on the low end. Prices have been pretty stable at the 3000+ for an entire year. And since the Ghz race has slowed, I'm not sure if we're ever going to see another $40 CPU, like the AthlonXP 1700+.

The best deal by far as I can tell right now, is theres a guy on ebay who every 2 weeks sells retailboxed AMD 3500+ venices for $190 shipped. Thats the lowest ive seen. I bought a 3200+ venice on ebay for $161 shipped also a while back. As prices drop more should get even cheaper.

longer you wait for prices to drop the shorter you'll have the cpu before it needs an upgrade. ok not true always and for all people, but for most there's a point at which waiting in the hope of price drops is just a false economy, you save twenty bucks for 2 months less enjoyment of a cpu that is already essentially bottom of the range.

I agree. The days of saving large amounts of money on the low end are gone for now -- especially since the market has become further segmented by dual core, and profit margins have become super slim. AMD simply can no longer afford to sell some of their processors at slightly above cost... and basically, they were the main driving force in keeping prices down.

Still the best way to get a cheap chip is on a For Sale forum, or on eBay. Too bad Venice wasn't nearly as good as the hype, or else you would have seen a flood of cheap Winchesters for sale. I believe when AMD X2 +3800 price point dips below $200 is when you'll see cheap Winchesters and Venices galore on the open market.... currently it's at $375.

what i still cannot understand is that the prices for 3000+ and 3200+ are significantly higher in the US then in Europe. In germany u can buy a 3000+ for about 110Euros. The slightly older stepping cost about 100Euros. the prices for the stronger models are the same in US and EU.

Are these OEM prices, or retail? Because at 110EUR or $138 USD, you can definitely find OEM Venices at that price on-line here in the US. Ewiz currently has the OEM A64 3000+ Venice at $129USD or 103EUR, and had them as low as $115USD or 92EURO until recently.

eh? in UK, at the e-tailer which is nearly always the cheapest:

3000+ retail is GBP £96.05 inc VAT = USD $176 ($150 ex VAT)
3200+ retail is GBP £129.21 inc VAT = USD $236 ($201 ex VAT)

VAT is 17.5% sales tax for UK

Germany may fare better since AMD have a fab in Dresden, Germany. If a 3200+ is like $100 i could fly there and pick up myself to save money.
