The toldeo core was expenisve to produce and had half the cache disabled but it still cost AMD the full cache price to make. Manchester is a 512 cache dual core built from the ground up that saves AMD money. Overclocking is about the same for both from what I have read.

The die is smaller on the Manchester, and it's supposed to use less power... so it should be a little cooler. Theoretically, that should give it an edge in overclocking. At least that's was I was reading. I don't OC, so it didn't matter to me.

Also, if the Toledo has failed testing in some way (and had part if its cache disabled) it *may* not be as overclocking friendly as a chip that has passed all its tests. I'm only guessing, but I'm leaning towards a Manchester myself.

AT Reviews showed equal power consumption!

The X2 3800 chip was basically started because of some faulty higher end chips. When an X2 Toledo Core (4400 or 4800) had problems with half of it's cache, they disabled it and then sold it as an X2 3800. When they realized there was a demand for this chip, they started producing it with half the cache and called it X2 3800 Manchester. The reason people believe that the Toledo core overclocks better is because it wasn't originally made to perform as an X2 3800, it was supposed to perform at something faster, but was tuned down.

geez, the prices are dropping like rain or what?!

i bought an x2 3800+ last week for $347 from zzf, now it's selling for $326! What makes it worse is that the cpu is still sitting in its box coz i am waiting for the video card, sucks, doesn't it?

i feel for ya... i know how that feels sometimes. also if you dont trust this place, try ewiz, they have both cores available for same price. I have been thinking about getting one myself. hoping for a freakish OC, still havent decided on toledo or manchester, maybe i'll hold out till prices stablize.

I think the toledo superior overclocking thing may just be a myth. SOmebody early on theorized that the fact there was extra cache that was disabled would help with heat consumption or something and people went from that. Need alot more information before it can be conclusively stated toledo >>> manchester.

i dont understand all of this talk about toledo being better than manchester. the toledos didn't have many high yields so amd made the manchesters. the manchesters had fewer dead chips (which had something to do with cache) and could clock higher...AND it uses 20 or 30 fewer watts.

No big deal. I bought one last week also w/ a MB and 2GB cheap Ram from MWave. Just up the FSB to get 4800+ performance and you will feel much better about your purchase . Right now, I've got it running at 230 x 10 w/o problems. I'll probably try 240 tonight.
