XP detects MP flawlessly, as does Server 2003.

Sounds like a BIOS thing first. But after resolving that, Win2K should *NOT* require a fresh install! Just to save you the hassle of reinstalling everything. Usually takes me more than a day or two on my developer machine...

I've never done it on W2K, but it was even possible on WinNT (way back when...) - try Google with "uptomp.exe". On WinNT it was not easy (but officially supported by M$), but not hard either. On Win2K it should be even simpler.

Upgrading Windows 2000 For 2 CPUs

Fortunately Windows2000 is much less of a pain to change back and forth between single-processor and SMP configurations. Simply go into the Device Manager and find the item 'Computer'. With 'Change Driver' you can choose whichever system configuation you fancy by choosing 'show all available drivers'.

Unless you want to reinstall anyway as a measure of windowcleaning (*sigh*), you should take a look at it. I seem to remember somebody posting it in the forum somewhere. Was it this thread? Or the official preorder thread? Bit long to go looking for it, but I guess it worked for him...

Good luck!

So does this mean I can skip system memory?
No, you need 4x1TB to really take advantage of the new 16-core CPU's multitasking capabilities. You can get by with 4x512GB of system RAM if you're using Linux instead of Windows Guernsey 2025 (2x1TB doesn't work as well because you're only using two of the four channels on the memory controller). But with either OS, once you start swapping code and data to your nonvolatile RAM, things really slow down. Even the fastest NV storage has latencies of almost 3 nanoseconds.

I saved it in a text file.

From the pre-order thread:

No probs with installation, recognised by mobo eveything smooth.
(ASUS A8V BIOS 1014)

Had to change one thing in Windows 2K to show up as 'dual CPU'.

Goto device manager.
Click the computer category.
Right click the uniprocessor entry.
Select update drivers.
Will detect current as single.
Select choose other compatible.
Select Multi processor.
Reboot

BTW, in my other thread I responded, but in case nobody read it, Duvie got me bios 1.95, and it enables the 2 cpus to be detected and work correctly. and also mine is 0517 also.

And on-topic, my 4400 is at 2560 at 1.47v and running 48c stable. Could get more later maybe.

If you get 2.6 you'll be set for the next 18 to months with no problems. You got some nice results.

Except we are all power whores and we dont know the meaning of "fast enough"......I use apps that just go faster and faster the more cpu you have...not like gaming where the vid card will become the bottleneck again...

Same here... I'm installing WinXP right now; haven't tried to overclock it yet (I'm new to o/cing on the A64 platform, so Zebo's guide will come in handy).

Just a question, and seeing as I've missed the X2 pre-orders, I wanted to know if the stock heatsink/fan with the X-2's would be silent enough in an Antec P-180? Say, maybe < 20 decibles at a meter. I probably won't do overclocking myself if I do this, but I want to know from someone who has the retail version.

What motherboard? Some have fan control via the BIOS; mine, for example, can run the fan at half speed until it hits a preset temperature. Same with the case fans.

Seems like there would be a market for a dual socket 939 board that used unbuffered ram and had two dual channel memory banks. Two 4400+ at 2.7ghz would be an encoding monster

I am getting my 4800+ on Friday and I am running the DFI nForce4 Ultra-D mobo and I wanted to know what you guys suggest as far as a bios goes? I have been both told to use the 510-3 and the 618-3. Any other input is greatly appreciated!

Those are my picks. I would go to DFI-Street.com and read some comments about each BIOS; see if there are any apparent issues with them. Remember that the "-3" BIOS are optimized for TCCD memory; BH5/CH5/UTT memory users should use the "-2" BIOS; and if you're unsure, or you have neither, "-1" is a good all around choice.

EDIT: I read some comments about the 618 BIOS on XS, and people who tried it came to the consensus that it's worse for running X2s than the 510 BIOS.

So 510 it is!

Yeah, but with the price of dual opterons and reg. ram and the dually boards, I don't see them in my price range any time soon.

Yikes, a pair of the cheapest 1.8GHz Dual-Core 265 Opterons will set you back over $1600! I guess if there is one place to overcharge people, it's in the server market.

Well I already have the mobo and the ram, so might as well make the best of it, and get dual-cores...Later.

Question - do you want to try and see if the 4400 is bandwidth starved - same clock speed but diff fsbs?

Interesting question I'd like answered

If it is bandwidth straved I wonder up to what point

Just got mine today and got it installed in my SN25P. Temps are nice and low at idle, and I will put it through the gauntlet of tests/benchmarks later today. I'll try my hand at overclocking this afternoon as well. The GF is in town which makes playing with my computer very hard...yet, ultimately less important all at the same time. I took my 3800+ Venice through a bunch of tests last night, so I'll have something solid to compare it to.

The ASUS A8N-E, but I read somewhere that it has a loud fan on the chipset so I wonder if that's such a good idea after all. I don't know yet because it's shipping now, along with the case, chip, and a zalman 7700 al/cu... just in case. I don't think that the full copper 7700 is a good idea as it adds too much weight over what's officially supported.

I'll probably try for a moderate overclock though, nothing too high like 20+ Yotahertz. After all, the latencies on my memory aren't exactly the best, if you look at my sig so that's a somewhat limiting factor. But I'm planning on upgrading again in two years when quad-cores are out.

It could be worse; he isn't planning on getting $6,000 Itaniums and re-writing all his code to work on them.
