Amd Athlon 64.

I am having a hard time choosing the motherboards and the proccessor. For the motherboard i am thikning of using MSI K8N Neo Platinum (nForce3 250Gb) but for the chip, i don'[t know which will be better, is it a athlon 64 2800+ or 3000+ Is there a big Difference between both of them ? what will be da cost ? Is it really worht to go either for 2800+/3000+

Graphics will be using XFX geforce Fx 5600XT

depends on what you do the 64 is definetly a stronger cpu but there isnt a whole lot of 64 bit support so overall you will see a minor improvement get 64 bit windows or linux and you WILL notice a big difference

You cant be serious. Unless you get the 2800+ up to like 2.5Ghz it is horrible compared to the A64. And still the A64 is much better. As for the 2800 compared to the 3000+ i believe there is a cache jump in there somewhere. I would be willing to bet youd see a 5-10% performance increase at MAX.

2800 and 3000+ are what it says, about 200mhz performance difference. and btw, a 2.5Ghz barton would be even in the tough tests with a 2800 and normally be up there with the 3200/3400 64.

Yep.

Of course the 3200+CG core at 2440 is another story.

I would get the 3000+ and make sure to get the CG core and overclock. You will probably get 2200 or more.

If you can afford to spend some extra cash shell out some money for an A64. It will most likely be worth it for ya.

Uh, if you're going to get the MSI Neo Platinum, I sure hope you're not going to get an Athlon XP chip, as it's Socket A, not Socket 754. An Athlon XP CPU will not fit into the motherboard you're getting.

Get the A64 2800+.

Nah dont get ther 2800+. THat is the newcastle core which doens't have as much cache. Just spen a little extra and get the 3000+. Or you could get a mobile 2800+ chip, those are unlocked and have the same amount of cache as the 3000 and 3200+. Im pretty sure that the K8N Neo recognizes them with a BIOS update.

As far as a I know both the 2800+ and the 3000+ have only 512k L2 cache.

All of the Athlon 64's are being transitioned to the Newcastle cores. You can get 3200+ and 3400+ Newcastles now. At the same "speed rating", they have 512KB instead of 1MB L2 cache, but they run 200 mhz faster. In general the extra speed seems to do more (remember, there's a bigger jump going from 2Ghz to 2.2 on an Athlon 64 than there is going from 3Ghz to 3.2 on an Intel chip). Also the Athlon 64 has a much larger L1 cache than the Pentium 4 anyway, and cache in and of itself is as meaningless as clockspeed. The Northwood P4 with 512KB is generally faster than a 1MB Prescott P4.

Mobile A64s are not unlocked. They have a "half lock", which means you can adjust the multiplier to any setting BELOW the stock multiplier (down to 4x), but not above.

(see This Thread for more info on overclocking mobiles. Motherboard support is still iffy, there is still no magic mobile + mobo combo like the xp mobile + NF7s or (Celeron 300a + Abit BH6 for the veterans). Just caught myself using "Celery" instead of Celeron, damn you guys to hell.

I think all the A64's allow you to lower the multiplier (for their "Cool N Quiet" feature).

If you go with the MSI Neo Platinum, I would avoid the mobile A64's or the DTR A64's since that MB seems to have issues with those mobile chips.

I personally like the A64 3000+ beacuse it seems like a good value currently. Definitely faster than a stock AXP of any speed. Plus, if 64bit ever takes off, you'll be ready.

OTOH, if you can wait, you might want to see how the Sempron processors do. They have the 32bit optimizations that were made to the A64 chips (and are therefore a bit faster than the AXP's), and may therefore be a good choice if you don't care about the 64 bit stuff and if you can wait for them to become available.

i have an asus k8v mobo that lets you set the proc spreed anywhere from the stock 2000 mhz with my 3000+ down at 100 mhz intervals. isn't this lowering the multiplier?
