Intel's 2.2-GHz Pentium 4 Debuts Early (PC WORLD)


<< Intel's newest microprocessor, the next-generation 2.2-GHz version of its Pentium 4 chip, went on sale in Tokyo's Akihabara electronics district on Thursday afternoon, ahead of its official launch date in January.

The new processor is not just a faster version of the company's previous chips but is the first new chip to be based on Intel's Northwood core. Produced using a state-of-the-art 0.13-micron production process rather than the 0.18-micron process used for current Willamette cores, the Northwood cores include double the amount of layer 2 cache memory, 512KB, which Intel says should translate into higher performance for users.

The Northwood core also uses less power and runs at a lower voltage--1.5 volts compared with 1.75 volts for the current Pentium 4 (originally code-named Willamette).

Along with the new 2.2-GHz chip, a 2.0-GHz Pentium 4 based on the Northwood core is also due to be launched officially soon. However, like the new processor, it has already made its Akihabara debut, appearing a couple of days before Christmas.

Prices for the 2.2-GHz processor range from $609 to $624, depending on the vendor. The 2.0-AGHz version (the letter A signifies the first-generation Northwood core) is selling in Japan for about $460.

Those prices may drop soon, however. An internal Intel roadmap described in late November had the 2.2-GHz Pentium 4 initially debuting in early January for $615 but being cut to $560 on January 27. >>

say what you want about the price of the 2000+, but a new top clock is sure to push down prices of the "laggards," maybe already is. From pricewatch:

This is an average 10% or so decline across the board in 10 days (see anandtech 12/18 cpu price guide). Wasn't the 1gig DURON just $110 a couple months ago???

Do you remember the prices of the so-called "laggards" before the 1900+ came out? I can't really remember b/c I wasn't pricewatching. I just got my new board today, but I'm torn to whether I should wait and get a 1800+....but if the price isn't gonna be that significant, I'll might as well get one now.

Basically, I'm trying to speculate the lowering of prices so I can "pounce." ;P Hey, you notice that pricewatch search is down?

I don't have much use for Tom's Hardware (I care for it even less than the hardware site associated with these forums), but as mentioned above they had a big write up called Plastic Surgery: Releasing The Athlon XP To Hit 2000+ about unlocking an Athlon and then proceed to benchmark one overclocked to 2000+ speed. Should be in the ball park since I don't think the real 2000+ offers any enhancements beyond a few MHz.

Cold! They can't ship the cpu before anyone else. So you are just paying more to have them hold your money for a couple weeks. Wait those two weeks and find it for around 300 then buy it. Both ways are equally fast. Remember all resellers must respect release dates, there is no legal way to get them faster in the US.
