A bit old, but fine enough for word processing, email, web browsing, watching DVDs and older games. You must have an AGP card in there, so your graphics options are fairly limited.

My girlfriend is using my old Barton 3000+. Runs XP, Outlook, Word, IE, Sims2 and PowerDVD quite well. She wouldn't notice much of a difference between that rig and something much faster.

If she were trying to join me in online games or play the latest games, then we'd have a problem.

You would be amazed at how well this CPU holds up in current games with a good graphics card.

I find that there hasn't been too much that's overly demanding on the market as of late. HL2 runs great on my AXP3200+ rig w/ X800Pro.

In raw CPU terms, they say a C2D is 4x the speed, just as a reference. I just have no idea why all that power is even necessary...

This will depend on the criteria your using.

Is it a good socket A chip - yes
Is it good compared to a P4 - this depends on what speed P4 and the type of programs you use
Is it good for a back scratcher - if you glue a stick to it, probably yes
Is it good for surfing the web, e-mail, watching DVDs and lite gamming - yes, as long as you have a decent amout of memory a DVD drive, and a capable video card
Is it good compared to current Athlon 64s or C2Ds - no not really
Is it good enough that if your motherboard died it would be worth fixing - this depends on your needs and finances, but I would say no (if this happens it is probably time to glue a stick to it and scratch your back )

That about sums it up.

I still have an XP3200 in my fleet. I also have 2 Opty 165 machines in the house so computing power isn't an issue. The XP chips are still serviceable light to medium duty processors. They will do just about any common task except handle the latest games. I probably won't move the XP machine out of the mix until I decide it is time I need more horsepower than an Opty 165 can deliver. I'm not quite ready to do that just yet.

The bottom line ... It depends on what your needs are. For the average user, an XP is fine. For most of the people on this forum ... it would work well for a second or third system. However, as "justly" already stated, if the motherboard died, it probably isn't worth fixing .... unless you happen to have a spare board laying around. Money would be better spent replacing rather than fixing an XP based system.

Just fine,... my K6-2/500 is good also,.... I guess it just boils down to what you are doing. If you want to run the latest and greatest games it may just be fair, if you do word processing and internet it's more than good.

Yuck, if you game, you are being crippled by that cpu.

Here :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813138247

$47.99

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819104245

$32.99

You will have a 256k L2 Sempron, easily overclock to 2+ghz (many people have these at 2.5+!!), use your existing memory, video, drives, etc. For about $80, you will have a giant boost in performance. You should be able to ebay your old crap for at least $50, if not $80.

Its a good cpu, it can still game just fine. The only time it will hold you back is if you are using an X1950 PRO or somthing similar and run your games at stupid-high resolutions.

That applies to AXP and Sempron 3000+'s theyre pretty similar performance wise anyways i think.

I've got an XPM 2500 @2.5GHz with an X800 XT PE ,I also play HL2 & whilst its fast enough for most of the game (so far ,I haven't finished it) ,their was one scene where it slowed to a crawl. That's the scene where your in the air boat & your fighting the helicopter ,all the explosions slowed things right down.
Also in Guild wars Nightfall I find sometimes that the CPU is only just fast enough when their are many characters ,'jiddering' is just noticeable.
NFSUG2 is another game where my XPM only just cuts it ,have to turn some eye candy down.I think Farcry ran ok.
High end XPs might be ok for some recent games but they wouldn't cut it for some of the 'latest & greatest' games.

An XP 3000 btw is roughly equivalent to a P4 2.66-2.8GHz (Northwood)
Oh & it would be a waste to make it into a back scratcher as you could sell it on ebay

That 6200 will be crippling your performance more than your CPU will be though.
Inccidently my 2nd rig is a Semp 3100 @2.52GHz ,its in the region of 15-25% faster than my XPM (I CBA to swap gear around incase your wondering ,I'm going C2D soon).

Depending the video card, it is may be fine for most games.

I had a Athlon XP 2400@3200 from the middle of 2004 through Jan 2006, 1-1.5GB RAM and a 9800 Pro. I played HL2 and Source games, Guild Wars, Joint Ops, BF2, FEAR, and others just fine. Source games could be ran at 1680x1050 for the most part if some details were turned down.

No idea where someone could say that it's only good for old games or word processing. Granted it would have no chance at games like RB6 Vegas, but a lot of games from 2004-2005 are still very popular and should be easily handled by it.

OTOH, as someone pointed out, for $80 you can get a A64 and motherboard. The 64bit doesn't help, but overall improvements to the A64 generation like the onboard memory controller means a 2 GHz A64 is quite a bit faster for games than a 2 GHz XP.

Your cpu should have no problems playing newer games. I'm not sure why someone would say is doesn't. No it won't produce A64 numbers, but the higher the resolution, the more it depends on the video card anyways.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your cpu. Especially if it does everything you want it to do.

MY .02 anyways

Edit: if this is your board, then it appears to use the nForce chipset with 200mhz(400 ddr) fsb support. But 2400mhz would probably be to much for that chip to handle. But it should have a pci/agp lock on it. I think you have to set the AGP speed to 67mhz to activate the pci lock. Hopefully it has fsb overclocking options with 1mhz increments. IT may be possible to get 2.2ghz from that chip. Which is about a 10% increase.

Considering they're the same chip, I would hope so

Take off 200 or so 'PRmhz' from teh sempron to compare the two directly.

As I already mentioned, it will struggle a little on Guild Wars Nightfall (for example) though it'd be ok for the original GWs ,that seems to have a lighter CPU load.

Yes, but if the cpu wasn't upto it in the first place a faster vid card won't help (not saying that his CPU isn't fast enough though)

Soviet
Running at high resolutions has nothing to do with the CPU ,its down to the vid card.

erickj92
As I said ,your 6200 will definatly cripple performance in recent games ,far more than the CPU might do.
As far as overclocking your CPU (assuming your mbrd can do FSB speeds inbetween 166-200) ,they would typically overclock to around 2.2-2.3GHz ,though you might be lucky & get 2.4GHz.
That's why I got an XP Mobile as some of them typically overclock to 2.4-2.5GHz

Also assuming that you did mean an XP 3000 & not the Sempron 3000 you have in your
sig ,did you mean XP?

Yeah they are pretty good, I still have a couple of Socket A platforms, one includes a 3000+@2.33ghz, it pretty much can handle any games that are thrown at it, even new ones...it's a bit of a bottleneck when paired with a 7800GS or X1950Pro...both of which I own, but with a 6800 or 6800GT it's still pretty good, and can run games at 1024x768 with most details set to hig or medium depending on the game.

I have an XP 3200+ in my backup rig with an X1600 Pro video card. This machine does great. HL2 runs @ 1280x1024 just fine with all the graphics turned up.
