I'm considering it for a Barton 3000+ replacement.

Are you sure its not a Sempron? I've seen sites on line wrongly selling Socket 754 Semprons under the name Athlon XP 3100+ before.

I did some research. Its a rare Thoroughbred core. 1/2 the L2 of the Bartons so less performance.

That's actually a pretty good price for the board + cpu. I checked on ebay and the 3000+ version is going for $120+ by itself. But like you said it has less performance so maybe its time for you to upgrade your mobo.

Could be one or those setups where the CPU is soldered to the MB instead of socketed. Not really a problem but it makes a CPU upgrade impossible.

PC Chips doesnt do that anymore but that other popular bundles deal (ECS?) does embed

Why not just get one of the outpost deals with a sempron and motherboard for 80 or an a64 3000 and motherboard for 100

Platform. I'm not throwing out my Athlon XP/AGP system ...I want to maximize it. Its a hobby thing. I'm still building my PCIe system and just bought the RAM upgrade but its RMA for this sext of Corsair XMS ...I was initially impressed but the next day it was all bluescreens. Popped in the OCZ and back to normal.

Anyway. This is about the Socket A platform not A64. I love my NF2 set's.

Then why would you even worry about repacing the barton? Like I said you can get a motherboard and processor for the same price as the socket 1 processor.

A better buy would be the Athlon XP 2500 Mobile, found a review and they overclocked it to 2.4Ghz! :Q

I bet you it doesn't run above 2GHz.

I doubt you would get it to clock higher than the Barton and it has less cache so will be a few % slower anyway.
