And you know what? I've been civil enough to you apoppin despite the fact that you are obviously a raving loon (I've lurked enough on this forum to know that much) but if you want to start hurling accusations about dishonesty go ahead. It's pretty clear who the lunatic is here given your ridiculous giveaway idea which is so insanely stupid it barely merits a response.

you're right Keys ... "a raving loon" .... "civil enough to you apoppin"
--you're not even american

Whatever. At least the stuff I write is borderline coherent. "Not even American"? Tangent much? I don't know what that has to do with anything, but I'm sure a mod can do an IP lookup to show that I'm in Redwood City, CA.

Of course what the hell my location has to do with the price of tea in China, I can't fathom.

RotL ... more ...

"the price of tea in China, I can't fathom"
and n00bs know about mod's 'IP lookups'
... gotcha

*so busted*

everything you write is BS ... there is no disguise good enough for you
--i hope you are enjoying your holiday ... Redwood city IS nice this time of year
*the disturbance in the Force was felt in So California*

What I'm saying is it's impressive that you do it all from dialup. And the average is irrelevant since you post more like 30 times a day now so you must have been silent during the earlier years

totally wrong ... in the early days ... i posted even more ... i started in CPUs ... then GH ... OT ... SW/Games ... and Video

i tend to post less when there is less news ... right now the console war is heating up, AMD looks to be faltering and needs help, there is HDxt vs GTS .... and i just upgraded my rig and needed and gave advice on it ... not to mention selling my P4ee and PC3500 in FS/T

dial up is 56K ... not 14

wow .. fewer flaws then i thought
-let me set your mind to rest

first of all, any promo is a gamble ... if you don't connect with your target you lose ... really simple

secondly, for my 'gimmick' to work, it is all in the presentation of it
--if it is done "right" ... from a position of *extreme confidence* . ... i.e. "we are the new AMD and we are SO *sure* of our product, we are giving 100,000 away in the biggest promo of its kind - ever"
--then their confidence will filter on down right to the fans ... AND if it "ties in" with the next launch of hd2950xt and barcelona ... well then, perception is changed forever ... you continue to market to those same fans with further coupons and promos.

imagine in a single month ... worldwide ... the negative buzz erased
--all for $25M

the alternative is 'no amd'

I dunno, it might work. But couldn't Nvidia counter with:

HD2900XT - so bad, they have to give it away.

Or

It's selling so poorly, they have 100,000 surplus units to give away 1 month after launch? (if you have a hot selling product, why would you have so many units available for a giveaway so close to launch, esp. a launch that's been delayed for 6months?)

To me, giveaways always seemed to work better if you gave away something that locked that person onto your product. Sort of like free razors.

With this giveaway, there's no guarantee that the winner will stay with ATI for future generations, or get others to buy ATI products. Worse case scenerio, a significant number of winners sell their HD2900XTs to finance buying Nvidia products, and then broadcast this on the forums. So, in effect, ATI is actually giving away money to Nvidia, and everyone knows it.

first of all it depends on the *presentation*
i.e
We are the New AMD and we are SO confident in our new Product we are giving 100,000 away in an unprecedented contest

i planned for "locking a customer in"
.. "we" would "tie in" the NEXT launch of graphics cards with a "dollars off" coupon ... and they would *agree* to accept email advertising .... PLUS they are *required* to fill out a survey at 30, 60 90 days

so they kept getting "fed" propaganda AND - of course, they get the "special deal" on Barcelona when it is announced

these customers would be carefully "cultivated" and well-equipped to "spread the AMD gospel"

It just seems incredible risky to me, depending on a lot of variables to work.

The ones that win have to have these characteristics.

1) Not already be ATI fans, cuz they're already promoting the brand for free.
2) Not already be Nvidia fans, cuz they're just as likely to sell the card as keep it. Or bitch about the cards short comings incessantly.
3) Be Neutral and be swayed to ATI's side.

Even if they are 3)
1) They have to have a power supply capable of powering the card. Otherwise they'll sell it and buy something else, or even worse, try and use the card and blow their system.
2) Care enough or be eloquent enough to persuade others to buy the ATI brand.

How many people could that be?

Sony tried something that is similar to this for the London launch of the PS3. They gave away big screen tvs to the first 100 or maybe it was 1000 people who bought the PS3 at a certain store. Created a lot of buzz, even outside of Great Britain, PS3 sales were so bad after the first month (or maybe first week, I forget), some retailers had to drop the price to drum up sales.

The lock in isn't really a lock in either. You're essentially paying them through a discount to buy your next generation. So not only are you giving them a card free this generation, you're giving a discount to buy the next generation. Which again doesn't stop them from selling both the prize and the coupon.

AMD can send them emails, which can be ignored, and surveys which can be filled at random, but AMD can't force them to spread the AMD gospel or to be effective at it if they tried.

Sorry for sounding so negative about this idea. Just bringing out these points to show that even if this promotion is executed extremely well, because of the random nature of giveaways, it still may not work.

ok ... i already *detailed* ALL of this ... encore:

first you *aim* at your customer

--like with Vista's "Give Away Contest", they must have the "proper rig" with a sufficient PS and CPU/RAM minimums ... obviously the GTXers wouldn't get them ... nor the people with 300w generic PSes ...

and like with the Vista Giveaway they must endure a "series" of AMD propaganda videos for which they must answer cleverly designed questions - to "qualify" them as possible fans - and to make sure they were paying attention ... randomly generated questions ... so no cheat sheet.

then they are considered, first come first served ... the "losers" get coupons for AMD products and future products so NO one "loses" ... and it is easy to tie coupons to specific 'winners' ... so no sales of coupons ... and after 90 days and 3 follow-up surveys, the HD2900xt is "theirs" for the winners to keep or sell

Don't forget ! ... those 3 surveys of 100,000 customers - if properly written - would give AMD info about their customers to otherwise DIE for ... valuable beyond reasoning in future PR ... priceless info ... insight into their customer's thoughts, desires, needs and wants - worldwide ... for decades to come

The "winners" are required - for "ownership" and 'warranty service' to answer follow-up questionnaires for which they are FURTHER "rewarded" ... they HAVE TO pay attention to you future emails ... for at least 90 days ... and it would be a pleasure since AMD's marketing has now got "smart" and won't bore them ... and now they are "prepped" for Barcelona

-of course it is a GAMBLE ... life is a gamble

for AMD a great promotion may mean the difference
--life ... or death

watch this - i am going to change a very boring title of one of my new almost-dead topics

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=31&threadid=2049545&enterthread=y

currently it is entitled:
Ice Storm Fighters Game Technology Demo ... To demonstrate how threaded games and game engines will benefit from multi-core
B-O-R-I-N-G
[on purpose]

... and 'no interest' ... like now, with AMD products ... even though many would like to try both - if they knew

--what shall i change it to? hmmmmm ...
How about?
See if YOUR rig can *Handle* Intel/Futuremarks Multi-Core demo - Single-Core/AMD rigs need not apply

shall i try it ?

let's just see "what happens"?

--it is in the *presentation*

so it's a flop ?

they should just give up and die

... actually here is the TRUTH of the matter

and it may be hard to accept although i purposely made it very obvious ... by my series of posts and threads

... no one really cares about AMD

... and i have no reason to feel responsible or guilty or offer to help ... because they created this current situation for "themselves" with a series of bad decisions ... and their attempt to "portray" themselves as really being "different" in trying to turn AMD around are *superficial*

so my current analysis of the AMD situation is done and it don't think anyone likes it
... i will let it go with a last update conclusion to my "hope for AMD" thread with the summary i also post here:

There is little to no hope under current management ... AMD will obviously falter and start to break apart within 6 months ... a year tops and it will be gone or bought --or unrecognizable

/analysis complete

*only* if you PROMISE to STOP bringing it up

and you never did answer my very pointed questions to you in the CPU/OC "AMD thread"

I just wanted to post to say that apoppin, alone, makes me avoid almost every significant thread in Video. I personally think he absolutely ruins the entire board.

Dude, you need to shut up and get a life, possibly more so than I've ever thought about any other forum user, and that's considering some pretty pathetic people.

I know you probably somewhat know what you're talking about, and that's cool, but your screaming, punctuation, rude comments, biased opinions, and absolute FLOODING of every thread is beyond ridiculous. If there was a script to block a specific users's posts I would pay MONEY for it just to have the chance to enjoy Video threads without reading your garbage.

With that said, I'm almost marking this for myself so I can check out this interview later.

apoppin, I think one of the major problems people are having with tone of your posts is that you get so overemotional. If you could tone it down a notch or three and try expressing yourself with a little less "color", it might ease things a bit for those people who wince whenever they see your avatar in a thread.

And the sheer number of your posts is a bit disturbing as well. I don't know how you manage to create so many posts a day on dialup. Take this thread as an example. On the first page alone, 30 out of the 100 posts were made by you. And as of right now, you've created 49 out of the 145 posts in this entire thread. That's over 1/3! To me, that's going beyond enthusiast and into the realm of obsession.

Instead of trying to drown the entire Video forum with your posts maybe it would be better if you were to slow down, read through your comments before posting them to see if it really requires a separate post and try to refrain from getting so agitated/excited all the time. A little dispassion would go a LONG way.
