I am planning to build an AMD based computer and I was wondering what mobo would be best for gaming and performance needs on a Windows 7 computer. I have seen a lot of people on reddit using ASRock mobo's but I was looking at MSI. Can someone tell me advantages/disadvantages? Or even your own opinion on mobo's.

I've used ASRock MBs for the past few builds and I've had zero problems with them. I've overclocked them up to 10% and used their core unlocking features (UCC) without issue. I don't think you can go wrong with them. I am waiting to see what happens when Piledriver comes out. Hopefully they will update the BIOS for my board quickly as I want to upgrade to PD if its a competitive CPU.

I've never used MSI MBs but I have used other products from them which also worked reliably except for one video card that failed after two years, and they replaced it without any fuss.

Yeah I was looking at Bulldozer and then realized Piledriver is coming. Thank you!

What CPU?

I used a AMD Athlon64 X2 4800 with my Asrock 939 Dual Sata 2. I bought this motherboard mostly because it allowed me to still use my 8xAGP video card with the option of upgrading to PCI express later on. Let's also not forget that this motherboard had the Future CPU Slot which i didn't use because i was given another motherboard.

From the overclock forums they are recommending to avoid msi boards. Their power sections have something wrong and blow up really easy it seems. I just ordered a gigabyte 990fx ud5.

My sister is still running a MSI K7N420-Pro (nForce 1) I built for her a decade ago.

MSI makes quality parts, about as reference Realtek as you can get, just don't expect anything fancy or extra bells and whistles like the Creative Supreme FX X-Fi 2 audio / Intel GB LAN on the ASUS Crosshair V Formula or the Broadcom Ethernet on the ASSRock Fatal1ity 990FX Professional.

However, they don't skimp on PS/2 Mouse + Keyboard, Optical / Coaxial digital audio, PCI-E x16 slots and USB 3 internal headers like some of the other lower end makers (Biostar) might.

Just avoid 4+1 phase motherboards if you're planning on overclocking.

A lot of the 4+1 have larger phases it seems from reading so it isn't too bad. The msi 8+1 are still blowing too. Seems asrock and asus have the best power setup right now.
