Who else is satisfied with AMD's bundled heatsink/fan? Nobody I seem to talk to has high regard for them, so I ask everyone to give them to me instead of dumping them for somthin else. May just be the fact that I have a Sempron...

I've built a bunch of rigs with the bundled amd heatsink/fan and they have no problems if you're running them at their normal speeds

I've read some reviews that included them and they're really not bad. I haven't heard about AMD having hot chips since AXP, so they must not suck too bad. I know that I'm pleased with mine-temps in mid 50's (100% load) @ 2.7 with stock voltage.

They're actually OK -- overclocked my Newcastle cored Athlon64 +3500 to 2585MHz (235FSB) using the stock heatsink and fan at default voltage (1.5V)

I have my Newcastle 3200 at 2550mhz on stock cooling. They are pretty good imo.

There's nothing wrong with the stock cooler per say; they are intended to cool a stock running system and keep it at reasonable temperatures. Some people over cool there systems for no good reason other than some preceived improvement that the componets don't care about

One area where the stock cooler falls down is in terms of noise. I replaced my 3200+ cooler with a Zalman 7000 series, and later an XP-120, and both of these aftermarket coolers are significantly quieter than stock. That's where the benifit really lies in my opinon.

Switching from the stock cooler to a XP-90 did not do anything dramatic for me, so I would have to say the stock cooler is more than adequet for the cool running 90nm AMD chips. I would just advise you to not use the stock thermal pad, but good grease like ceramique.

For stock, they're all right. But if you're overclocking like a mofo (Kinda sounds like me! ) You'll need something better. (Think Zalman 7700Cu or Thermalright XP-120.)

They're perfectly fine, even for some moderate overclocking. If you're doing some major OCing or demand silence while your CPU is chugging at 100% load, then aftermarket is for you.

When a stock HSF can keep a CPU at decent temperatures after a 30% or higher overclock (1.8ghz to 2.5ghz) then it's pretty darn good.

I agree. My Intel P4C (Northwood) stock cooler came with a 40mm fan - pretty damn small if you ask me.

The *noise* wasn't bothering me - it was the pitch of the noise that was seriously pissing me off. It sounded like a teacher scratching the chalkboard - really high pitched.

If it had a more masculine grunt, I woudln't have minded - as my computer is generally on load when I play games, and the speakers drone out the sound... but the high pitched noise cut through ths speaker noise, so I ended up getting a 7700-AlCu. Good stuff.

Yes, amazingly the 40~60mm fan in my laptop makes a rather low pitch noise. I really can hardly hear it 6 inches away from my face, at least not over my TV.
High pitched noises just really bug me. >_<

xp-90 came with fan clips (1 set for 80mm and 1 for 92mm).. if you remove the stock fan and the little thingy at the top of the hs.. the 80mm clip for the xp-90 fits perfectly in the screw holes

like pretty much everyone has said.. stock hsf is perfectly fine for more people.. if you live in a particularly warm climate you may feel more comfortable with aftermarket cooling.. i plan on sticking the stock hs with an 80mm fan to my video card
