Why are the Puma+ cores being called Carizzo-L when they're not XV cores?

Why are Nvidia GT730 cards called GT 730 when they're actually GT 630s?

Maaaaarketiiiiiing. xD

All 3 hardware giants do this every once in a while....rebrand things and sell them to people who don't know any better... Not like it's the first time for AMD, either *cough HD 7000/R 200 cough*

But the King of rebranding would be Nvidia for sure. 730's are 630's which are 440's.....The rebrand is so deep...Adele rolls in it. All their X00 to X30's have been rebrands or rebrands of rebrands for the past few generations XD But like I said...all 3 companies rebrand their stuff to sell it yet again...since that is cheaper than actually making new chips. Not to mention the production of the chips doesn't have enough failures/mistakes anymore to produce any actual chips that would be low end enough...so better take a previous generation and sell it again as a lower end of the next generation.

Puma+ should be a new core though :hmm:
Otherwise what is the point of releasing it in December. :\

No Carrizo for desktop next year, correct?

We dont know, they published only the roadmap for mobile APUs, logicaly the Excavator equipped Carrizo will find its way in the FM2+ plateform, the integrated PCH is a cut down version of the A78/A88 and has not enough I/O for a DT usage, hence the existing infrastructure is opportunisticly adequate.

Isn't it odd that that they didn't update their Desktop Roadmap? And even in their press news nothing about desktop:
The Future of Compute event kicked off with the addition of the high performance processor codenamed “Carrizo” and mainstream processor codenamed “Carrizo-L” SoCs to the company’s mobile Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) product roadmap. Designed as complete solutions for consumers looking to accelerate gaming and productivity applications and enable UHD 4K experiences, these latest mobile APUs are scheduled to ship in 1H 2015, with laptop and All-in-One systems expected in market by mid-year 2015.

AMD is terrible at communicating, more than anything else. I wouldn't read much into it.

Well one thing is for certain, if carrizo doesn't get released to the desktop market, kaveri will probably be my last AMD chip I ever buy. I've always been an AMD fan but sooner or later the head up ass syndrome plays a factor in buying choices.

Looks like this old rumor is correct:

http://www.eteknix.com/amd-carrizo-desktop-apus-delayed-kaveri-refresh-to-fill-the-gap/

"AMD will not release Carrizo desktop APUs until 2016 and instead they will refresh the Kaveri product stack to bring out the 5th generation of APUs based on that. Carrizo will still arrive in 2015 in its mobile form according to the source, but there’s no sight of the desktop variant. "

Unless Zen is delayed or something I doubt AMD is going to launch Carrizo desktop in 2016.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-...aces-bumps-in-road-before-new-chips-help.html
AMD still has to get through 18 months of old technology before the new chips are available.

18 months from September means the 1H of 2016 for Zen.

Yea...no. I don't think that Carrizo got cancelled for FM2+.

I doubt that they would release a new socket, claim that it's gonna receive support until 2016 and then only release a single chip for it in 2014.

And a Kaveri refresh is also somewhat unlikely. Kaveri can't really be pushed much further due to it's technical limitations.

Even if the chip itself had a bit of OC headroom..it's just that OC headroom...nothing more.

I don't think AMD actually had the audacity to release a new platform for a single chip and sell it as a "futureproof-ish" path for the future...nah man...not gonna happen....I don't think AMD could fall that low.

The only way I could see an advancement with Kaveri on FM2+ is if they at least updated the GPU side...but then they would have to make a new chip for this, regardless...so then there is no reason to not go with Excavator cores and the whole set of upgrades since "upscaling" it to Desktop shouldnt be much of a deal if they already made a smaller chip for mobile.

With the updated tech the Desktop APU performance could go from R7 250 to inbetween the 260 and 260X....that would be an APU that could sell like hotcakes. Not sure that this is an opportunity that AMD would want to miss out on. Especially with the premise of the DDR3 bandwidth issue being at least partially fixed.

Carrizo is an SoC with the PCH ondie and not just on package like Intel's U and Y models. They had talked about coming up with a solution to work with the socket chipset, but it would have been a bit of work I imagine.

Since I'm pretty sure that AMD sees APUs as a tool of the (far) future, I don't think they want to skip working on this solution.

At some point in the future (years from now) APUs/SoCs might be the way to go even for hardcore gamers.

So "not finding solutions" to something like that doesn't sound like something you would want to deal with from a business perspective.

Either way...I just don't think a Kaveri refresh is all that feasible for FM2+. They can't really push the chip a whole lot more due to all the limitations that apply to it.

Especially with new GPUs coming in 2015 it would make sense for a new APU coming out that will be able to crossfire with a low end/medium card from the NEW generation...

Personally I think that APUs are going to take over the market in a few years...once the technical limitations of the current generation are out of the window.

Carrizo for Desktop will be on two sockets;
FM2+(1H2015) and FS2(2H2015).

Carrizo-L for Desktop will be on one socket;
FS2(2H2015).

FS2 is the successor socket to AM1/FS1b.

Have any details leaked or your best guess on the number of PCIe lanes these may have?
Best guess;

FM2+; Carrizo
8x PCI Express 3.0, GPU0
8x PCI Express 3.0, GPU1
8x PCI Express 2.0, GPP/UMI
128-bit DDR3

FS2; Carrizo(ATX, Micro-ATX, Mini-ITX)
8x PCI Express 3.0(4.0?), GPU0
8x PCI Express 3.0(4.0?), GPU1
8x PCI Express 3.0, GPP
128-bit DDR4

FS2; Carrizo-L(Micro-ATX, Mini-ITX)
8x PCI Express 3.0(4.0?), GPU0
4x PCI Express 3.0, GPP
128-bit DDR4

ATX model might be desktop APU FX for example;
FX APU
FX Chipset for FS2

Rather, than;
A(x) APU
A(xx) Chipset

Well the x8 vs x16 lanes for a single graphics card (or anything you mash in that PCI-E slot) should not have an impact.

There's hardly a card that can actually utilize the x16 lanes in PCI-E gen 3.....it's just too much.

Even with PCI-E gen 2 the difference would be like 1.5 fps at best in games (granted you use a high end card...which again...is kinda weird if you use that kind of APU/CPU)

The only downside is that you can't stroke your ego with the fact that you have x16 lanes. PCI-E gen 3 in its entirety is still kind of unnecessary...not saying that it will stay that way...just how it is right now xD
