"In the spirit of fair and open competition, AMD today issued a challenge to Intel to conduct a head-to-head competition of dual-core x86 server processors. AMD's proposed dual-core duel in 2005 would be a live, public performance evaluation between server platforms based on the highest-performing Dual-Core AMD Opteron(TM) 800 Series or 200 Series processors and the corresponding Intel x86 server processors that are commercially available in volume"

Sort of a "Put up or Shut up" scenario...

LOL! Or insist that everyone use Intel compilers only...!

I love the idea of one company calling the other one out...especially when it's the little guy doing the calling!

intel would say no in any scenario. you never accept to such a thing if the opponent is setting it up or volunteers the idea. if Tom's Hardware or CNET asked both other companies...then they might bite.

I find it rather childish and unprofessional, in an interesting kind of way. Reminds me of AMD's kick-back attitude years ago.

Which is childish? AMD's challenge? or Intel's refusal? Or both?

Well Intel cant accept as they would lose. Sun-Tsu said somthing about only fight battles that you are sure to win.

Thats good for Amd though, a bit of aggressive marketing cant hurt emm

Ohh... AMD win this not in contest as there will be none (yet). But in PR - that is worth A Lot now in IDF days...

Only thing is that its going to hit back as soon as Intel has a decent lineup...

i dont know, i think just the plain fact that AMD announced this will hurt intel. wether they except or decline.

I don't know about you guys, but I would love to see the battle...
Maybe they could get HP to referee?

I prefer the phrase "If you can't keep up, don't step up." But it doesn't apply here, since AMD is the one calling Intel out.

Intel still wouldn't accept. They'd lose... BIG TIME... and they know it. If I remember right, someone's already Spec'ed the 800's versus the X2's and it was like watching a two year old fight Mike Tyson.

Strickly a marketing ploy. You know that both companies have already done this comparison extensively in the lab, and both know what the outcome would be. Just a bit of gamesmanship by AMD because they know they have the upper hand. Intel will probably not even respond.

This is true...but if you turn it around and say "What percentage of the money spent" instead of % of the public, then that number is VERY high...
By this I mean that the public aren't the largest consumers of computers, business is...and they care quite a bit (and they're learning very fast!).

Good point!

I will also point out that Intel has been so successful selling computers to the general public because of the reputation they developed in businesses. The "Pentium must be good, thats what we have at work" mentality has expanded Intels superiority in the home PC market also. That's another reason why AMD wants to emphasize their superiority in the server market, it will translate into additional demand for AMD products in the home PC market as well.

It certainly is a Marketing Ploy on AMDs part, but a smart one. No matter what happens AMD wins, for they get some Media attention, they potentially put Intel in the spot of having to respond in some fashion, and if Intel accepted AMD would win there as well. If the tables should ever turn and AMD is the Goliath, I'm sure Intel will do the same thing and AMD will ignore Intel. There's no way for the Goliath to benefit from such a challenge.
