AMD Chipset Drivers...How to install?

So, I know this is an ongoing issue, I've seen many complain about in the past, but I can not get the chipset drivers to install on my new Ryzen desktop. I had this issue in the past on both my 970m and llano based laptop.

So, my PC is a Dell with a x370 board. I reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows direct from the Microsoft creation tool. Installed the drivers provided on Dells site. Video card and the majority of everything installed fine. Computer works, but all the chipset devices have Microsoft branded drivers in device manager.

So, I downloaded both the video package and the chipset package off of the AMD site. They both appear the same each time I run them. I go to custom install and it's the same 4 devices it sees every time.

So, I tried to manually install some things. Under the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" I had 2 listings for "Standard SATA AHCI Controller". The top one installed "AMD SATA Controller" when I manually pointed it to the AMD directory folder. The second one refused to install even though I once again pointed it to the AMD driver directory folder.

Why does the AMD installer blunder everything? If there is no way to get the installer to detect the chipset properly how do I find out what all devices in device manager need an AMD driver manually installed?

Why are you doing this? Are there devices that aren't functioning properly, or are not performing properly, or do you just have "computer OCD", and have the need to have everything in device manager labeled "AMD" in the description?

AFAIK, MS's SATA drivers (msahci.sys) work just fine and dandy on AMD-chipset motherboards.

If the computer works fine, sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone.
(Unless there are kernel driver security issues that prompt a driver update, like the current NVidia video driver suite.)

I'm having an issue where I am getting usb input lag from my mouse and keyboard. So, that's why I started playing around with it to get drivers installed and updated properly to see if there was a conflict somewhere.

However, as for why I'm doing this, it's because AMD makes chipset drivers for their chipset.... why would it not install the drivers? Why have a separate download section specifically for chipset driver package if it doesn't install anything?

When I run the AMD chipset driver installer, on Wndows 10 CU, it has an installer similar to their crimson and relive video driver installers, and it displays several rectangles, listing the various SMBus, SATA, USB3.0 drivers, etc., and they each have a checkbox, which is by default checked.

Do you not see this when installing?

Yeah! That's what I need. All I get is the Display driver, HDMI, radeon settings, and problem report wizard.

I googled it and other people have experienced this issue too, but I can't find what causes it or why the installer doesn't detect it. I know I have the right installer, it's like 500mb unzipped compared to the smaller video driver package and it's version 17.10.

You might have downloaded the correct installer, but I can almost assure you that you aren't running the right one. Those install choices are the ones from the ReLive driver package, and not the chipset driver package.

Edit: I should clarify. I'm not saying that you're double-clicking the wrong installer. You may be.

But the installer / decompressor, may, decompress the installer, and then launch the installer, using a specific filename in the Windows\Temp directory (or User\Temp).

I've had this before, with Firefox, and various versions.

If there is an ALREADY EXISTING installer EXE in the Temp directory, it seems to take precedence.

So what I'm saying is, if you installed the AMD video drivers FIRST, then when you go to install the chipset drivers SECOND, it may execute the installer widget for the video drivers AGAIN.

So, I would either:
1) un-install all AMD software on the machine

or

2) re-format, and install the chipset drivers FIRST, then the video drivers.

Thanks for the help! I'll definitely try to get a clean uninstall of everything AMD on the system and go from there.

And yes I'm clicking the right installer haha . I understand what you explained though it makes sense.

Lol, yes if only it had been that simple.

Larry's idea worked. I had to totally remove everything AMD driver and package related from my system and reinstalled the chipset drivers first and then proceeded to download the video driver package. Everything installed fine that way.

Clicking the chipset installer after the video package has been run will not work, at least not on either of my two AMD systems.

Just to clarify........did you install chipset drivers, motherboard drivers, and then video drivers.....in that order? Do the motherboard drivers include the chipset drivers or are they separate? I'm not trying to troll or threadcrap here......just trying to be sure. I have interest in a Ryzen system in the future and just wanted to make sure exactly what needed to be done. Thanks!

No problem at all!

The chipset drivers are basically the "motherboard" drivers. You just download 2 packages: the chipset driver package off of AMD's website and the video card driver package.

I then installed one of them at a time starting with the chipset driver package first.

Keep in mind if you're building your own system your mobo might come with a disc with your chipset drivers on it. Or you can download them from the manufactures site.

I just like to always have my stuff up to day so I download the latest drivers every few months.
