I enabled Cool & Quiet finally, just to see what a difference it makes, dropped the temps dramatically, but can I expect any negatives in having it enabled?

When i first built my system i played around with cool and quiet, but i didnt like it. The system felt a little less responsive to me. I performed this test:

I made a huge jpg file 4000x4000 or something. I then zoomed way in on that jpeg with both cool and quiet enabled and disabled. I compared the times required to zoom, and without cool and quiet they were significantly better. With cool and quiet the system takes some time to decide to increase its clockspeed, this time effected my jpeg zoom times. I keep it off.

Hmmm would you say it affects game performance too? I always had it enabled since I built my system so I dunno if there is a difference.

That's what I'm trying to deceide, it seems as if Firefox has slowed down since I enabled it. Response time seems slower overall, but I've yet to find anything stating this on web searches?

Cooler yes, quiet yes too....but performance, I wonder?

dont use it. i just like power. and wasting electricity, and destroying the environment... nah, i just dont like using it. especially since i had so many driver issues and it kept getting stuck at 1ghz

I thought Cool N Quiet adjusted the CPU speed 30 times a second to ensure that there was no reduced responsiveness while using it. I use Cool N Quiet always and haven't seen any reduced performance or responsiveness in games or apps. Venice 3800 @ 2.6 Ghz.

No it probably wouldnt effect game performance because games push the CPU utilization way up close to 100% when you start them. This will cause Cool and quiet to ramp its clock speed up to full for the duration of the game. The only downsides are the percieved responsiveness in windows (when CPU utilization is low and is used in short spurts). I dont care about wasting the electricity, the decrease in responsiveness drives me insane.

edit: at the time i ran this test was on a first gen a64 mobo (socket 754) with an initial bios release. I dont know if they've improved it, but i dont care, im running it on full all the time.

it's not really the electricity everyone cares....it's more like the heat, with less heat coming from the cpu, with less heat, the components of your WHOLE computer/case would be lower, thus increasing life span of all the components, especially the psu.

You can still use it if you're overclocked. All it does is adjust the multiplier\voltage.

Not noticeably. Agian, whenever you run an app that uses a good deal of the CPu (games, benchmarks, etc.) the CPU will ramp up to full.

If i wasn't OCing, i might use it, but i just don't like the idea of adding more complications.

CnQ doesn't make any difference on my system... it's not any cooler, nor quieter... the fan already runs at like 1200rpm thanks to Asus' Q-Fan. It's at 40C idle...

No. Keep it on. Some cheap motherboards from crappy manufacturers may not support it but its unlikely.

I leave it on all the time during games and never had a problem with framerates and 3dmark differences were insignificant. Its the best thing since sliced bread.

I enabled it but it didn't really make any difference other than dropping my CPU speed to 900 MHz or so. I've turned it off now.

I use it and love it. My Antec cool and quiet case is even cooler now that I activated it. I think the new 1014 bios for my motherboard has helped.

Simply leave it idle with folding programs off makes a 3800+ run at like 20W anyways. With Cool & Quiet, your frequency gets dropped to half, so you save like 10W? Yayz. Who cares. 60W Load, 20W idle. I say that 1/3 drop is a lot more than the 20W => 10W. I'd rather have my system running full speed.
