Amazing price cut. But unless you are a diehard AMD fan or have lots of stocks in the company, Intel's Core Duo seems a much better chip for a new rig, considering that a $316 X6600 can keep up with FX62 (that's without o/cing the Intel) with less heat/noise. It's interesting to see the table turned on AMD (I switched from Intel to AMD 5 years ago and have bought at least 8 K7/8's).

There will also be a few products EOL (End of Life) among them the 1MB cache versions like the X2 4400+

So... this means they are stopping making the X2 4400+'s? Should I be glad that I already bought my 4400+?

I know. I want to upgrade to dual core for $150, but then I'll be stuck with a single core Venice. Hardly worth anything to ebay it. Maybe I'll wait for a Fry's combo special with a socket939 X2 and build a hand me down system.

If I were building a brand new rig, I'd agree with you. Since I already 2 GB of DDR1 RAM, a nice motherboard, etc, I think I'm just going to do the CPU upgrade. I think that's what AMD is counting on as opposed to people building new rigs.

$224 for an X2 4600+ is a much better deal than a new Intel platform, even if I'm missing out on 20% performance. I'll gladly take the extra $500 I'd need to spend on replacement RAM, CPU, and motherboard any day.

That's called Progress.
Like you, I switched to AMD 5 years age.
If AMD can't match new Intel CPU, then I'll switch back to Intel on my next refresh.

well i'm a price/performance fanboy not just performance.. the performance fanboys are lining up for the E6600's.. wish them luck getting their hands on one for the price Intel advertised.. I'd personally keep an eye out for deals on the 3800+ single core.. that's a price/performer if i can get one bundled with a mobo for around $120...

those are great looking prices. My brother is having me build him a nice computer for when he goes back to school in the fall. The budget is around $700. And Im the one who knows the computer stuff and should have the better computer, but

I paid $164 for my 3200+ a year ago, and he gets to pay $150 for an 3800+ X2.

no fair

Where do the E6300 and E6400 fall in comparison to the X2's? Also I've got a single core 3800+, how fast of an X2 would I need to see an improvement in single apps (X2's are clocked a lot lower so slower for single apps right?)

Well if that application takes advantage of the dual cores you will see a dramatic increase in performance. Also dual cores really help with system performance as I noticed less lag and such with my Opteron 165.
If you get the 3800+ X2 you can probably OC it to a decent speed where it will a rocking deal.
I am also really interested in the Conroe chips, but for now they will be too expensive and also I will need a new mobo and new ram. It does kinda feel bad that I just got my Opteron 165 less than 5 months ago, but o well just the move in technology.

what apps take advantage of the duo core?

I have a duo core in my laptop and its amazing how fast it really is!

I will probably pick up an AM2 3800x2 when these prices do drop, so I was wondering, is there a benchmark that compares AM2 S939 and OPTYs all in one lil benchmark?

I was looking at building a new HTPC with a X2 3800+, but after seeing the Core 2 Duo reviews and seeing AMD's price cut to only $150, it seems like a no brainer to pick the slowest Conroe for $183. The upgrade path will be much better in the future as well.

Sorry AMD, I missed out on your whole Athlon 64 lineup, moving from a P4 to AXP to Core 2.

Oh well, thats the way it goes...

Easy. Offer him the 3200 for a low price like $50 and get a 3800 X2 for yourself. Single core speed is the same.

I am holding my breath in anticipation.

I have been looking to upgrade my current system, but have all this DDR memory laying around (I got in on the 2GB Kingston DDR/400 for ~35 a couple of weeks back 4GB for <80). Currently have an Athlon 2800+, an X2 -4600 will be a real nice upgrade.

I have had some people try to talk me out of the Socket 939 because it will limit future upgrades, but since a new socket comes out every couple of years, byt the time I upgrade again I will have to replace the MB anyways.

Sorry if this wasn't the place to ask, I had seen several reviews of the Conroe but none had the 6300 or 6400, I see AT does have the 6300, so thanks.

E6300 will fall near X2 4600+ ... and add the OC headroom.

The price is different than price list from Dailytech list (list X2 at $169) so $20 is what AT (and Tom's) mention the additional price cut....

you and me both...

I have a P4 2.6c!!!!!

I've built machines with the Athlon 64, but never experienced it myself... I think the Core 2 is where I am headed because I am in the market in building myself a new rig. we'll see.

I hate Fry's.

They refuse to help you with these CPU's. Their bait & switch tactics should be reported to the BBB.

On the CPU wall, they've got a TON of clearanced CPU's (basically, anything in $xx.90)

So when I go asking them for the Sempron 2800 for $29.90, they kept trying to sell me a different Sempron 2800 that's $69.99 (they've got maybe, 6 different SKU's (SKU's are product #'s) for the Sempron 2800 alone)

So when I kept pushing for the $29.90 one, they finally said, "Those are discontinued and we don't have any more."

WTF?!? Why the HECK would they put up a sign+sticker advertising it then!??!

Some other stuff I found (listen, if you score in on any of these, post!, but I truly doubt it, because they won't bother checking stock status on any of the $xx.90 items, they'll just say it's OOS - out of stock)

Sempron 2500+ (socket A) - $4.90
K6-II 300mhz - $1.90
Sempron 3100+ - $39.90
Sempron 3100+ - $29.90
Sempron 3100+ - $19.90 (yes, I saw all of these in their computer, all different SKU's)
Sempron 2800+ - $29.90
Sempron 2800+ - $19.90
Sempron XXXX - $9.90 - $49.90

I could go on and on forever

But they'll never sell you these CPUs. Bait and switch!!!!!
