We are certainly starting to see movement. It actually makes these cards a great value compared to Nvidia now.

Does this mean the prices you can buy the cards at will actually be lower?

I ask because the cards were already available at those prices...sometimes even less.

Tigerdirect is selling a 7970 for $378 shipped right now.

Yes, it gives retailers and manufacturers more wiggle room to sell products at lower prices.

I think those are fair prices given the competition and what's available as of today. Can't nag about AMD prices anymore. Too bad I'm skipping this gen.

I see three cards on their site, all from VisionTek (Not sure what the differences are.) for $369.99 shipped. That seems like an amazing deal to me.

Edit: Eh, I see in the other post on pricing that this is old news already.

HD7950 Reference for $279.99 CDN at NCIX.

MSI TwinFrozr HD7950 for $305 CDN.

Prices are already lower than AMD's price cuts earlier this week. Considering HD7950s were going for $469-499 in February-March, these prices are very good. Great for the consumer!

Hmm. There are now 7950's for 300/310 after rebate. Never thought I'd get AMD this generation, but I'm not sure I can justify that extra 90 bucks for the 670.

If they really wanted to sell more cards than nVidia they'd lower the price to $47.99.

Sorry, did you mean if AMD lowered HD7970 to $479.99 when GTX680 launched? Not sure about the reference of $47.99?

We're still getting bent over, compared to 40nm.

NV charged $500 for GTX580 though. It was HD6950 @ 6970 for $250 that made that generation spectacular in terms of good value. Before that it was HD5850 for $269 and HD4870 for $299 (and before that 8800GT).

It almost looks like NV and AMD are splitting full generations that used to be 2 years apart into half generations every 12 months. Perhaps this is because it's harder and harder to shrink transistors to lower nodes. So what we have is $500 prices for high-end GPUs and about half a generation increase in performance without overclocking (30-40% from GTX580 to HD7970/680 and another 30-40% (?) from HD8970/GTX780 next year).

Also, the GPU makers have noted that wafer costs are rising and they haven't passed on those increase to us in half a decade! High-end GPUs are still $500-550 not $800-1000. It looks like instead of charging $800 for a 520mm^2, NV just gave us a smaller 294mm^2 die and charged $500 for it. AMD took a different approach by keeping the die size similar to 6970 but raising the price from $370 to $550.

You're only getting bent over if you're buying. When they reach a price I find suitable I'll buy one.

Curious as to why you got rid of your 480? Was it all that heat and noise started to bother you? It was a good overclocker, right? GTX480 @ 580 speed is still very good, just 35% or so slower than the top $450-500 cards.

I think if you kept the 480 you might have been able to skip the entire GTX600/700 generations and waited until Maxwell in 2014 if you are willing to turn down settings. GTX460 is much slower than an overclocked 480.

Ummm I highly doubt we are. Market dictates prices. Just because AMD gave us a generation of GPUs with the best value we have ever seen, doesn't mean it's sustainable. People need to get over of how spoiled we were. Businesses are in for profits.

Too true. If I was AMD or Nvidia I'd do it too. I can make a card outperform everything we've made to date and be somewhat faster than the competition at certain things and in certain benches, and it costs us less to make?

Yeah I'm gonna give everyone a good deal and sell it cheap right? lol

Those two statements contradict each other.

Trying to make sense of my GPU buying and selling would make your head hurt. I've owned two 580's at different times, a 5850, 5870, 3 different gtx 460's, two different gtx 480's, a gtx 670, and im back to a gtx 460.
I have another money pit in my mustang so the GPU budget has shrunk considerably.
Honestly I'd been better off keeping the first gtx 580 I scored for dirt cheap as an open box item on Newegg not long after launch.

Take a look at game console hardware/game prices and you might feel better about the cost of GPUs on the PC.

Next generation PS4/Xbox will probably cost $400+, games for $50-60. I think in the context of the overall system cost, the PC + high-end GPUs that can be resold is still cheaper. If you are to get a PS4/Xbox, it's $400-500 sunk cost over 6-7 years (+ $40-50 Xbox Live fees for online) vs. Buying $400 GPU and selling it to $250 every 15 months and upgrading.

GPU depreciation cost per year = $150 x 6 upgrades over 7 years = $900
Xbox next ~$450 + $40-50 Live fees x 7 years = $730-800
PS4 $450 (cheapest option)

But PC games cost less and you don't necessarily need to upgrade GPUs every 15 months or get $400 ones. If you stay 1 generation behind, you can pick up a GPU for $200 and upgrade once the next gen gets to $200. So for example, just pick up GTX670 when it hits $200, then GTX870 when that hits $200, etc. The performance/graphics should be better than consoles for a similar price.

PS. I thought Mustang was a pretty reliable car. Is yours an older model year?

We know the 7950 is clocked very conservatively. Once O/C'd the 7950 can hang with the big boys. In some cases for hundreds less. Anyone playing at 1080 can't do better bang/$ than the 7950 and cranking up the clocks.
