Hey guys, I've got some strange issues and really need some help.

Specs
Asus Maximus v Gene
i7 3570k
16gb RAM
850 Evo 1TB
HD7970

1. I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. All went swell, installed Crimson, things appeared to be fine.

2a. A few minutes while seeing lots of internet activity, I figure Windows 10 is updating something.

2b. Screen freezes with image still on screen, so I restart computer.

3. Black screen just before Windows Login

4. Boot to safe mode, use DDU to uninstall Crimson, reboot

5. Boot now HANGS on Windows logo + spinning dots

6. Boot to safe mode, DISABLE integrated graphics

7. Everything works.

8. Try to install Crimson drivers, at Analyzing System --> return to step 2b

--

Each time I try to install Crimson drivers, the screen freezes with the image still on it at Analyzing system, and I have to reboot into safe mode, disable the integrated graphics all over again, and then reboot.

Does anybody know what is going on?

I'm about to try again after uninstalling the integrated graphics drivers AND disabling, so we'll see how it goes. Will also try Catalyst.

Not sure if this will help, but you could try doing some windows repair options like SFC, chkdsk, see if that helps. Sometimes the windows 10 upgrade doesn't go so smoothly.

If need be, you could try a fresh install, once windows 10 is activated, which it should be. That is, if you don't have too much stuff that would need reinstalling.

Good thinking, I'll try that. Need to research SFC.

Bleh, a fresh install is the last thing I want to do, and on top of that, I'm pretty cetain this would just happen again.

This is a repeatable thing that keeps happening, and it's got to do with graphics driver specifically. Just can't find anybody else with the same issue who fixed it.

SFC is a command line utility built into windows. From admin command prompt, type sfc /scannow

What version are you using? 16.5.3?

I was trying 16.5.2 at first but now will try 16.5.3 and if that doesn't work, Catalyst 15.11.1

The thing is, 16.5.2 installed just fine after the first boot post W10 upgrade. It was only after Microsoft downloaded some update that this all started.

I'm suspecting microsoft installed the driver for the HD4400. However, given that I can't actually disable the iGPU in my bios (only disable render / multimonitor which is functionally the same but windows is still detecting it), I'm hoping simply uninstalling the HD4400 driver and then setting windows not to update devices will do the trick.

Hoping, anyway. Thanks for your replies, by the way.

Update:

I uninstalled the Windows 10 drivers for the HD4400, disabled the device. Crimson drivers installed fine, and I'm now about to test 3d.

Been troubleshooting this for hours, can't believe it was as simple as uninstalling display drivers for integrated and then disabling the device.

Just wanted to chime in that I too have issues with AMD video cards (7950) when I enable the integrated Intel graphics. Specifically, I lose the ability to have three monitors simultaneously on a 7950, whether expanded desktop or eyefinity. Windows prevents you from enabling the third monitor (yes I was using all three monitors perfectly fine under Windows 8 using active displayport adapter).

So do you have to disable it via device manager or does your bios give you an option? Unfortunately I can't disable it at the bios level which means that everytime Windows decides it needs to update my HD4400 drivers (hopefully not often), it'll throw me into the hardlock boot loop until I go into safe mode and disable it.

Not the end of the world, but a frustrating bug. Why the hell hasn't it been fixed yet? It seems Windows is trying to output monitor signal via the integrated rather than discrete unless it's disabled.
