Question AMD Dual 7601 for WCG

Hello,

I forgot I had an Anandtech account that I created over a decade, so here is my first post.

I have a dual socket server supporting Xeon E5 v3/v4 and instead of upgrading that, I want to move to AMD Epyc series with a rev 2.0 board so I can later drop in Rome 7742 or similar when they drop in price. I've been reading Markfw's threads regarding AMD Epyc and WCG.

I'm not sure which boards support ES but I would prefer to purchase retail. I found the below CPU on eBay and not sure if this is an AMD equivalent to Intel's ES or a retail version:

Rev 2.0 SM Board

SUPERMICRO MBD-H12DSi-N6-O

RAM

I'll buy some DDR4 2666 RDIMMS off ebay with 64 GB per socket for upgrade to 64 cores in the future.

In summary, I think I am on the right track for finding parts. I don't think the linked is an "ES" but I am not completely sure. The board is Rev 2 to allow Rome CPUs, and RAM shouldn't be too difficult to attain. Is the linked board the one to get? Are there other recommendations?

Thanks for the help.

OK, that motherboard will NOT work. It has to support 7001 series, that one does 7002 and 7003. You need to double-check everything, but this one looks like it supports 7001 (7601's , naples) and 7002's (Rome)

The CPUs are great, got cheaper since I got them. Even cheaper here, and I think I have bought from these guys:

For memory, I got 16 of these:

Thats the post expensive part of it($1200). Make sure your PSU has 2 8 pin CPU plugs.

As far as WCG performance, here is a bunch from mine: (the 3rd column is points per day)

Great. That answered another question if the 7002/7003 board unofficially support 7001 but that's cleared up.

How can I be sure that board is Rev 2 and therefore supports Rome CPUs?

I think I'll settle with 128 GBs of RAM. I read in your previous post that you did 256 and I think they may be overkill for WCG projects.

I was about to pull the trigger on 2-20 core E5 V4s, but long term Naples/Rome makes more sense.

I have a 750W EVGA Gold G3 laying around that has 2 8 pin EPS-12V so no issues on the power end.

Thanks for the info,

I got the 256, since Rosetta required 2 gig per thread. But thats now a screwed up project, so I am all WCG now, and yes, 128 gig total with 16 dimms is fine.

Yes, I could not even sell 14 core Xeon V3's, I GAVE them away. The motherboard I linked will do Rome, so when they get affordable, it will also work with them.

It makes sense. I don't want to invest the money into a dead platform.

I'm going to try to buy the board off Amazon and maybe it will come with a warranty. I don't mind CPU/RAM off eBay but I'm hesitant with boards and no warranty.

Its supposed to be new, and from a vendor with 100% feedback. I have bought many off ebay like this. Don't worry.
