I need a dual system asap and I am interested in putting together a Tyan K7 based system. Has anyone here put one of these together? How has the reliability been? I know anandtech is using this system and I"m curious to see what other people have to say. Any good vendors selling complete systems?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Anandtech! This review should help you out.

Here's a quote from the article:

"As we have been able to test both boards for months now, we can safely say that Tyan's dual Athlon boards are the most stable Athlon platforms on the earth. We have tested the samples that both AMD and Tyan have sent us, and several retail boards (Tyan Tiger MP) for more than three months now, and we have never seen one workstation benchmark fail or crash."

I've put together two Tyan 2462 systems and love mine (one for work, one for home). Most of my work is with AutoCAD, 3D Studio, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. If you're in a hurry Monarchcomputer.com has pre-tested combo's at a pretty good price Link

Thanks for the input. We orderded 2 dual P4 2.0s to be safe, but also ordered an Alienware dual 1800+ MP system... I hope the AMD is as good as everyone says it is!

Thanks again.

Sounds like a reasonably smart way to go into it. At least you'll have something to compare the AMD system to. Let us know how it goes.

I built my dual TBird MP system just over two months ago, the experience was nothing short of blissful.

By far the most stable system I've ever owned, & fast as hell to boot.

i'm a little confused here, how many boards does tyan make?

there's the tiger, k7, and .....?

also, what are their respective model numbers? when i try to match them up and look for prices, all the sites go by their serial or model numbers.

So far Tyan has two:

Thunder K7 (S2462, the original spendy one)
Tiger MP (S2460, the newer, lighter version)

I have had the Thunder K7 since it was released.
Excellent quality
Rock solid stability, excellent performance. Running 2 1.2 Ghz MPs with 1GB RAM Win2K Pro SP2.

thx viper...i see you have the tiger MP....was you decision purely based on cost as far as the 2 tyan boards?

the reason i ask is that if people say the other thunder is better, i will wait and save for it.....if there is basicall no difference, i will do like you and get the tiger.

they are larger then the standard ATX MB. I believe the extend ATX spec. You will need a beefy power supply for sure. And they do not come with any kind of scsi/ide raid.

I didn't feel like paying an assload of money for features I didn't need or want:

Onboard video - I have a G450 for a reason
Onboard NIC - I happen to like my Intel Pro/100+
Onboard SCSI - I'd rather utilize the 64-bit PCI slots later with a RAID card

The Tiger MP is a very simple, straightforward board. I like things that way, since it allows me more flexibility later. Plus the power supply requirements for the Thunder are pretty steep. My Enermax 451 works fine with the Tiger.

which will fit in my lian li 60? i heard these tyan boards are BIG!

It is a very large board, it wouldn't fit in the case I had my BP6 in. I bought a Fong Kai FK-320 to use.

also, what is the highest GHZ i can fit on these puppies?

Who knows, I know for sure they work with the current 1900+'s & I expect to be able to drop 2000+'s in when they hit the market next month. At this point you're certainly not limited by the board.

lastly, do any of these have built in raid? ide or scsi?

Nope, no RAID. But there are four beautiful 64-bit PCI slots sitting there waiting, or if you get an MPX there are four 64-bit 66 MHz PCI slots. Can anybody say four way Cheetah 15K's in RAID0?

Asus came out with a Dual AMD MP board, that is the one that you want to get, it has the AMD760MPx chipset, this is what you want. It is a very sexy motherboard, it should be for sale any day now if it isnt already. The Tyan board has the older Chipset and is not as fast. If you want some sexy speeds out of the board then you are going to want ot get the ASUS board, it is set up also to use a regular ATX Power supply and a ATX case.

BTW: Welcome to Anandtech, the best place on the Net, Other then the HardForums

My Tiger MP board with Athlon MPs 1.2 is rock solid stable. Better than my BX board, although in fairness the BX was running a different OS.

I built one with the TigerMP and 2 1.4 GHz Thunderbirds for a customer. It rocked, flat out screamed. Put in RAID 0 and 1 GB of RAM for him, too. Rock solid, I tested it at 100% utilization for a week with no problems.
