and they are around the same MSRP...what kind of competition is this?

Yeah, if not for the AIO cooler, I'd be more disappointed.

Welps, I saw some scores, and I wasn't blown away so now my decision comes to whom gets in stock first. 980 Ti Hybrid or Fury X. But I admit that's a little unfair setup tehe. ()

Oh man, what a shame. Slower than the 980 TI, less vram, more power consumption, same price. And as it currently stands, terrible overclocking.

also, this card as it stands will have 0 impact on the whole price hierarchy below the 980 ti levels. 28 nm, go die already pls.

Slower than 980TI overall. Uses more power. Doesnt seem to OC well. 2GB memory less. But comes with a water cooler.

slightly disappointed. Yes, it is competitive. But, Big Maxwell's OC ability really separates the 2 cards. It really looks like GTX 980Ti/TiX is the faster card by atleast 10-15% once overclocked.

I really like the look and build quality of the Fury X. It's really a step forward. On the plus side, I am sure there is a TON of extra performance left on the table due to immature drivers. It wouldn't surprise me if the Fury X can gain another 10-15% through driver optimization.

As it stands, it is competitive. But, I feel Nvidia has the upper hand at the moment because it just overclocks a bit bitter.

I suppose I'll be waiting to see how Fury X overclocks once voltage control/proper OC tools are available.

I was also surprised at how little it improved over 390X in some benchmarks. Seems like some room for driver improvements...

Of course it's nice to see AMD actually has a proper cooling solution on their top end card now

Toms actually had it using less power (GPU only) than the reference 980Ti:

Sweclockers find it using between 980Ti & Titan X power:

Certainly a big improvement in perf/w compared to Hawaii and slightly less gaming load too.

Cool, very silent. But OCs like rubbish though without access to vcore.

My verdict: Good effort from AMD for matching NV's big GPU, but not enough performance to move me to upgrade. I'll wait for 14nm stuff.

The power consumption is pretty much fixed. It's up to parity with Nvidia. 20-30watts either way for a top tier GPUs is negligible. Good job, AMD!

I feel the Fury X needs to gain atleast another 10-15% through overclocking for it to really compete with big maxwell. It's pretty much a given most GTX980ti/TiX can hit 1400mhz. That's what Fury X is competing against because there are cards out there that boost that high out of the box.

Well it's only optimistically equal to the 980Ti - in general the nvidia card has a slight edge, except at 4K where fury equals it until the game decides to use more then 4GB of memory (e.g. dying light) at which point it falls away fast. Lack or rops might also be a problem. Then there's the whole HDMI 2 problem with 4K. Awaiting proper o/c results as we know the 980Ti o/c well.

My guess is 980Ti is going to pull away once you o/c but come back in 6 months and AMD will have caught up with driver enhancements.

As far as sales well it's not fast enough, combine that with 4GB not being future proof, lack of HDMI 2, more nvidia *optimised* games, and nvidia's much stronger brand at the very high end and you can guess what's going to happen...

imo its enough to give the faithful something to buy, but it's not going to steal enough 980Ti sales to matter.

Disapointed.

If you know the card is being released, why don't your provide the correct overclocking tools to the reviewers.

That card is crap to my eyes for now. It would have been a win if it was close to the Titan x in most scenarios but it is not the case... It is below the GTX 980ti in most cases.

Yeah, hard to understand why the reviewers don't have the ability to overclock Fury.

TOms doesnt show it clearly less than the 980TI. And they claim it uses less power.

Gaming Power Consumption

This is the result that most of you will be interested in after checking out the gaming benchmarks. And again, the news looks good. An average just under 221W for AMD’s Radeon R9 Fury X after a warm-up period (it registers 216W cold) is well under what we observed from Nvidia's reference GeForce GTX 980 Ti! The 12W difference might not be a lot, but it's enough to send a clear message.

AMD needs to put out drivers but I think they are waiting on windows 10 to drop their major drivers.

Wow. So it's basically a slightly slower 980 Ti with less VRAM?

Depends on the site, TPU has it 2% slower. Computerbase's summary has it 1% faster. I call it a tie.

It's dead quiet, runs much cooler, that has to be worth something? Or maybe noise & heat isn't an issue anymore.

The biggest problem I see with it, is how well the 980Ti custom models OC. I mean you can spend a bit extra on the EVGA Hybrid AIO 980Ti and crank it to 1.5ghz and it will be Titan X + 20% performance while running cool & quiet.

Fury X even when vcore support is added, I doubt it will OC as well given how GCN behaves. Thus the overall winner is a good custom 980Ti.

I guess H wont be receiving any more review samples. That was a way harsh review I must say. Saying AMD's GPU progrss is now more closely resembling it's CPU progress was a bit too far.
Does anyone commend AMD for this higher performance bigger die with less power consumption than 290x? Or can this simply be attributed to HBM and a top end 56C water cooling temp? Cooler temps do reduce power consumption. Thoughts?

It didn't embarrass itself, but it didn't move the performance bar one millimeter. Great option at least for those who like to stick with AMD, plus it's quiet, cool, and small. However, even assuming voltage tools become available I just don't see this thing being able to attempt hanging with the Classified, Lightning and HOF variants of the 980Ti, maybe not even the lesser custom models.
