This looks to be one of several upcoming applications accelerated on AMD's Fusion processors and GPUs with OpenCl.

Wonder how much compression and decompression can be accelerated by OpenCL. Would be nice to see 7zip, Winrar, and other archiving software support this if the performance improvement is pretty significant.

AMD desperately needs more developers embracing OpenCL like this. GPGPU is pretty much the only area they have a solid advantage over Intel and could take the performance crown away from them.

WinZip still exists?

Also, Corel still exists?

It is by far the most used zip utility. Desktops come pre shipped with that, not WinRar or 7-zip or any of the others. And it's just the beggining of programs accelerated with OpenCL.

I hope AMD can get few more company's on board OpenCL wagon & improve their product value further. Nice to see this initiative from AMD.

I use winzip as much I use winrar.

AMD had started a program similar to NVIDIA's where they are offering money to company's with novel ideas using their products/tech. Maybe this is one of the fruits

And one of the first things I remove and replace with 7-zip. :hmm:

Bloatware FTL.

I would posit that built in OS functionality is most used...

This is great news because it will have a snowball effect on the other competing programs and justifies the purchase of an AMD apu system based on Llano and future products, they must build the software ecosystem for the fusion platform very aggresively, i hope the new GCN core provides a big boost to program ability and easiness.

I don't know about killer app, but this is the kind of news I want to hear from AMD, not BS about transistor count or how process tech doesn't matter. I hope this OpenCL thing really takes off.

Nvidia's GPUs also support openCL right? If so it could help push GPGPU computing if both Nvidia and AMD graphics processors could be used by developers.

Yeah, I'd expect that they would, however I think it'll likely be difficult for CUDA to gain true market dominance since developers will probably be less inclined to code for something that only Nvidia GPUs have.

just to remeber....Intel is going to support openCL aswell

If Intel supports openCL, I don't see how CUDA could win in the long run. Wouldn't developers much rather code for something that runs on Intel, AMD and Nvidia's chips?

Microsoft AMP C++ is another one to take a look at.

It may be cross platform as well.

I'd guess that the APU killer app would be html5 /browser acceleration. Just think facebook games for the masses... You get the idea...

Still nice to see some opencl support though

hard to imagine CUDA winning even if amd didn't existed.

Don't see the killer app in this. It' s not like it takes hours to unzip "small" files and in the end that it was 99.9% of users do use it for.

I mean anything that takes more than a few seconds I don't wait for it to finish but proceed to do something else and then go back. I agree with previous poster about html 5. Killer app must be something everyone uses everyday very frequently. Else id won't impact consumer decision wich cpu to buy.
