Wow! AMD picked up a half a point of market share! 1/2 a point. LOL. I'm sure Intel is shaking now. Hehe.

That said any gain is good news for AMD but they still have ways to go to reach the same share they had during the Tbird era.

I remember reading that AMD's revenues increased by 84% to 2.5 billion since January 2004. Intel's rose by 18%.

While that revenue increase is good, you have to remember the comparison basis. Revenues were low for both companies post bubble crash so of course it's going to look like big increase when compared to those low periods.

If you have $1 and you get $1 more, that's 100% increase. Sounds impressive saying you got 100% increase.

Take that same $1 increase when you have $100. That's 1% increase on the same $1. 1% doesn't sound impressive does it?

It was only couple of quarters ago AMD was posting huge losses for company of that size. They need all the help they can get. Meanwhile I believe Intel just posted largest revenue in the company's history.

Intel's 18% increase is much more impressive IMO considering it's lot harder to increase such a large figure.

------ AMD Annual sales --------- AMD Operating Income ---------- AMD Net Income Per Share

1999 ----$2.9B ------------------------- ($321M) -------------------------------- ($0.30)
2000 ----$4.6B ------------------------- $889M -------------------------------- $3.25
2001 ----$3.9B ------------------------- ($58M) --------------------------------- ($0.18)
2002 ----$2.7B ------------------------- ($1.2B) -------------------------------- ($3.81)
2003 ----$3.5B ------------------------- ($233M) -------------------------------- ($0.79)

As you can see, AMD is still recovering. It'll take them a few years to recover fully. Good thing they are increasing their R&D every other year. I think it was around $850 Million in 2003 compared to $810 Million in 2002. I heard they are planning on beating $1 Billion this year. Of course this is very little compared to Intel's $5 Billion + R&D budget but still, AMD is doing good right now.

Going by above figure, the only year AMD made a profit for the year was the year 2000. Right after the biggest IT spending in history due to 2K IT upgrades and bubble mania. AMD also had their biggest market share with the Tbird and had the speed lead. It's likely we'll see repeat of 2000 this year for AMD with A64 and the speed lead it has. But you have to realize Intel's yearly NET income is greater than AMD's total ANNUAL sales. AMD is peanuts compared to Intel in sales and profit.

Yes, and they still manage to come up with a competitive and innovative product. Isn't that amazing?

BTW, that's a 1/2% increase for the quarter. Which is pretty damn good.

From the article...

"More often than not, the market share held by Intel and AMD shifts by less than one percentage point in any given quarter."

From the article as well:

"Seasonal trends took hold during the second quarter, Mercury Research figures show. Many PC makers opted for cheaper chips such as Intel's lower-speed Pentium 4 chips and AMD's Athlon XP chips, giving AMD the edge, especially in systems destined for emerging PC markets, such as China, India and Eastern Europe, said Dean McCarron, Mercury Research's principal analyst."

Which basically says that AMD sold a few more CPU's because their lowend is cheaper. The increase does not seem to have anything to do with AMD's improvments in the highend with the A64. Which brings up another point, nothing in the article mentions average selling price, which is probably heavily in the favor of Intel basically rendering that .5% shift irrelevant and not having any significant impact on AMD's shaky financial situation.

All I care about is price to performance. Which AMD has dominated for four years now Let's hope they can keep thier performance up and prices down unlike they are doing with socket 939.

People are happy, because if AMD does well, they'll stick around to provide Intel with competition, and hence good products at lower prices.
In other words, indirect monetary gains.

Me, I'd love it if AMD, Intel and VIA captured ~33 percent each of the market, one company dominating it the way Intel has done until fairly recently is bad news for everyone but that company and it's shareholders.

Because intel's the big one. AMD is the small one and seeing as they make it through and still has some competing products and gaining markeshare. its a big thing for them.. bleh. think for a change..

even if you love Intel, this is good news. AMD doing well means more competition which means lower prices for faster CPU's for the consumer
