Successor of Radeon HD 7970 has 20 percent higher Compute Power (not gaming performance), based on EGCN (Enhanced GCN) and will be launched Q3/2012 or Q1/2013. Specification: 2304 Stream processors, 384-bit mem bus, 3GB GDDR5 6 GHz. TDP 250W, idle 3W.

7980 ? At first I thought it was just going to be an 1100core 7970, but may actually have more under the hood.

I believe it is the HD8900 released probably 12+ months after HD7900 launched (09 January 2012).

Could be 2304 ALUs at 980MHz.

Good to see AMD is not slowing down. Keep it coming.

That's just 4 more CUs, what are the chances that they're there in Tahiti and fused off waiting for a more mature 28nm process?

This is the HD 8970 some of us were discussing since about a month ago. It'll be AMD's ticket to competing with GK110. Now, if their estimate is a bit over 1.2x more compute performance than the HD 7970, I'm afraid the increase in performance won't be that big because a big portion of that will come from the additional compute units, and the additional compute units will mean only about 5% faster clock-for-clock than the 7970. Clocks will probably be at 1-1.05GHz and no more, which makes sense since AMD wants to have a similar power draw to the current 7970.

Now, assuming this the HD 8970 will be anywhere from 10-20% faster than the HD 7970. If that's the case, and it probably will be, the top-tier GK110 card will easily have higher performance (by 10-15%). We'll be at the same situation as the HD 6970 vs. GTX 580 by the end of the year, where GK110 will be 10-15% faster but consume much more power. AMD will end up competing with the GTX 770 at the top. Mark my words.

Tahiti has all CUs enabled. What AMD will do is simply make a new die with more compute units. This will obviously also increase the die size, which for this new card would be at 380mm^2 to 400mm^2. They can use the better yields and lower leakage afforded by a more mature process to get power consumption similar to the 7970 provided they don't go too high on the clocks (1.1GHz or over).

Did I miss the release and review of the GK110 coz there's an awful lot of assumptions being made about it. Or we just taking NVIDIA Italy PR as gospel now?

Mostly wishful thinking it seems.

Sounds like it will be slightly better version of what the hd4890 was to the hd4870. A slightly larger, tweaked chip but in this case it will have more enhancements under the hood. AMD is continuing their aggressive release cycle on 28nm like they did on 40nm. Has this been verified to be real and not a fake slide?

Indeed, I think the 4870 -> 4890 analogy is very apt. Confirmation would be nice as well, although there were leaks of that Sapphire product list with 2304 shader parts. That would coincide with a 1.2x TFLOP increase, although it could all be a ruse created by a well-informed site looking for hits.

You need to go look up that word and learn its definition if you you're going to use it correctly.
GK110 beating Tahiti is a pretty logical assumption if you ask me. Gigantic die of doom squashing a cute little 352mm² die... seems pretty reasonable.

Given Nvidia's consistent failures with their large GPUs, I'd imagine they'd start toning back on the die size. GT200 was a disaster, GF100 was a disaster, and GK100 got scrapped, with GK110/112 (or whatever you want to call it) coming far later. GF110 was just fixing their broken GF100, although kudos to Nvidia for releasing it in a timely manner.

It'll be interesting to see if GK110 is an actual tweak to the GK100 Kepler line - the cards we should be seeing in around a month.

I think it's fake. Even if you toss out the spelling error, just has a fake feeling to it.
Not seeing any spelling errors.
