I remember Creative Labs and their Soundblasters. Back in the days I'd keep a slot aside just for the sound card.

Have my Audigy2 plugged in my only PCI slot with a connection to a Creative Labs DTS hardware encoder to Denon AVR and onto an Arcam Muso/Logo 5.1 setup. Without good sound no immersion...

Sound is such a subjective thing though. It's also one of those things the brain compensates for when it's not right. This is why so many people can accept less than stellar sound. It is an acquired taste though and people tend to get addicted quite easily. This is where making people aware and getting them to sample it makes a big difference. I used to sell high end audio gear. If you sat people down in front of a true hi-fi system with music they were familiar with you could really open their eyes, or ears actually.

I agree with you, it is subjective in my opinion; and does make a big difference not just in gaming, but also for those that have HTPCs. With this type of technology, and once aware, I think more and more people will want it in their systems.

You can be a gamer and a audiophile. I have M-Audio studio speakers and a JBL sub (2.1 setup) hooked to my Gaming PC. When playing i love to hear explosions, V8 engines, fight sounds, etc (low frequency). I think that can't be replicated with smallish speakers.
My point is, with quality speakers the importance of the sound source is greater.

Most people have just heard crap sound. If you've never had good sound. It's not cheap from amplification through to speakers. I have been waiting for games to come out with a DTS-HD Master but...

I see there's a lot of discussion here about audiophile technologies. When I think audiophile I think "accurate sound reproduction of original source".

But I really don't believe this is what amd is pushing, is it?
It sounds to me like amd is pushing more technologies that CREATE that original source. You still need a DAC to actually render the sound, right?

So, more HRTF function type stuff, like what A3D (Aureal 3-Dimensional) and creative CMSS do. Right?

I think it would be cool if they could really push this and possibly in the future have the card render audio correctly dependant on 3d geometry.

Proper echos, reverb, dampening.

I want effects like when you have a full spectrum of sound from a source and a large objects moves in between the source and the player that the higher frequencies get muted. (think helicoper thumping out of view suddenly clears over a hill and is in full view and you suddenly get impacted with the full spectrum of sound coming from the helicopter)

I want effects like sound travelling excellently acrross the surface of a smooth lake.

I want to be creeping around at night alone and hear someone suddenly whisper in my ear and jump in my seat with terror.

Trueaudio definitely is not for audiophile stuff. It is for gaming immersion much like the EAX or Aureal of the old days used to do. Of course windows doesn't allow that level of audio immersion anymore because of DirectX - now we just get dolby surround, generally speaking, which is definitely as good in terms of immersion compared to the old EAX/CMSS 3D or even Aureal.

That said, i'm not sold on True Audio. I don't care about it whatsoever, it isn't why I buy a GPU. But it is not about audiophile - it is about immersion. Personally, I think they shouldn't have bothered.
