AMD weren't making use of Nvidia's IP, the third party (Eran Badit) was and he clearly had permission. I seriously doubt AMD chose not to support it due to any kind of legal reasons.

Do you have a source that he had permission or are you just making it up?

So you're saying he had permission to freely use nVidias IP, and he was going to freely give his work away to AMD (which he'd also need permission to do) and AMD decided not to have this feature that would have cost them absolutely nothing?

Sorry bud, but it doesn't work that way. I can guarantee you that isn't how it went down for the simple fact that it makes no sense.

nice :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

The new features keep adding up:

- TrueAudio
- Mantle API
- DX11.2 (hardware managed virtual memory for GPU)
- New CF that ditches the awkward connectors and uses PCIe 3.0, that's also backwards compatible with PCIe 2.0.
- Dual Dual-Link DVI (like NV, which means no more expensive Active DP adapter) and support for up 6 monitors (if have 3 identical monitors, can use any of the 3 types of outputs)

Launch date October 15.

The exhausts at the front of the card inside the case must be to quiet the blower down. Maybe it releases some turbulence inside the shroud reducing the dust buster effect?

Or if they are intakes they will be great for crossfire. Nothing blocking them in cramped situations.

I think they are exhausts though based on other pictures that showed the blades set to push air out in that direction.

Now this is a bombshell. Most figured AMD would never go back to 2x DL-DVI after they pushed DP so hard with the 6xxx cards. I've stuck with AMD until now but having to use DP since i have two 2560x* monitors is a pain in the ass with the DP sleep bug. Major kudos to AMD for addressing this.

I'm more excited about the changes to crossfire. I may try it out for the first time if reviews are positive. 2x R9 290's should last for about 10 years I would think...

Nvidia is going to face some serious competition with Hawaii. R9 290 at USD 400 - 450 is going to make Nvidia rethink their pricing strategy. GTX 770 against R9 290. thats a no contest. a stock GTX 770 at 1150 mhz will lose to a stock R9 290 running at 800 - 850 mhz. R9 290 will be 5 - 10% slower than R9 290X on a clock for clock basis. You can imagine what will be the situation when a voltage overclocked R9 290 at 1.15 - 1.2 Ghz goes against GTX 770 at 1.3 - 1.35 Ghz. it won't be a pretty sight for Nvidia.

I'm pretty sure these are intakes to deal with the serious problem of crossfiring two cards in adjoining slots. All those pictures of mATX cases with dual 6970s or 7970s probably got AMD in a little trouble when users actually tried to replicate that...

I think it's a great idea.

Yeah it sounds like it! It'll be interesting to see the specs of what they do to the reference cooler. (temps/noise)

So far it seems the 290 is 499 and the 290X 599.

Too expensive for my taste. 290 @ $375 and 290X @$450 and I'll buy but not a penny above that nonsense.

My 7970 more than paid for itself via bitcoining so I'm in no rush to pay big money for ~30% bump.

Still excited for the reviews and to see what this chip can do with aftermarket coolers/pcb.

I doubt the $499 very much.

$200, $250, $300 -> $500, $600? It's too big of a gap.
More likely $400-450?

No idea on the 290, but Linus who was there in Hawaii has a feeling it will probably be $599 for the 290X.

Based on a vague reference to having seen performance and feeling that 'AMD can price it wherever they want to based on the current GPU landscape'

Just a guess, but I think the 290 will be priced around $400 and 290x $500.

If there's a 6GB version of the 290x that could be $600.

As AMD's chip is smaller, they don't have to price as high to make the same amount of profit NV is making.
