I bought a 7990 almost a year ago but it only lasted a few months before it died. I knew going in that it was an ex-mining card. The previous owner sold it at just about the right time. I'm guessing that the 7990 and 295x2 both tax their power delivery systems beyond what we see in normal cards, making them more prone to failure when used for heavy loads like mining or DC.

All that is pure speculation on my part, though, but I won't be getting any more dual GPU cards for now unless they've lived a pampered life inside a high-end gaming rig or the like.

dang, that's a bummer about the dual proc GPUs :/

otoh, there are RX470s on Newegg, supposedly new, coverable by squaretrade's extendable warranty. supposedly (included is 30 days ಠ_ಠ)

Yeah, I'm not trusting any used GPU for another year or so. Unless it's a known DC folk, I'm assuming that it is a trashed buttcoin miner

I think why we are seeing a glut of these come out on the market is because AMD uses globalfoundries to produce their dies in China Chengdu. While current production output is over 120,000 wafers per month for it's first phase, wait till the second and third phase hits when they ramp up the 7nm fabs starting next year. CPU/GPU will be CRAZY cheap. Skipping 10nm and producing 7nm chips will cut power reduction in half. China is investing heavily and is already building two more fab factories and plans for more... They pumping billions of dollars into their tech sector.

Good times ahead... As far as pumping out massive quantities for chips and advancing the tech even further for the future. This is why AMD has come out with so many chips and why we see 32 core 64 thread monster CPU's today.

I see some HUGE changes in tech in the next 2~5 years. Not only will we have 64/128 core CPUs on the market, but they will all be running at 4.5ghz with massive amounts of L1/L2 cache..... Maybe including 32Gigs / 64Gigs of ram right on the dies themselves... Cutting out the bottle neck of ram will make CPU/GPUs 100% more effient.

The point is, I'm getting about 50K work units done per day with relatively low settings on my rig and virtually no overclocking. But... This will become childs play as these chips will be half the price and 4x ~ 8x the output with lower power consumption. Will be great for science and AI.

Re new gear: GlobalFoundries canceled their 7 nm process development, and any 5 nm and 3 nm research as well. There are only TSMC, Samsung, and Intel left as manufacturers of 10 nm and finer processes. And the development of chips for advanced processes is going with exponentially increasing costs.

Re old gear: I have seen people arguing that used miner GPUs may be in better condition than used gamer GPUs because the former had been operated at constant load, were downvolted, and well cooled, while the latter were subjected to spiky load and possibly sitting in a computer case with marginal air flow. (But on the other hand, people claiming this may well have had a personal interest in high resale value of miner gear.)

Whhhooops! I guess that's what happens when you take a break for a few months! LOL...

Well, I guess that is the beauty of going fabless...

AMD Exec Resigns, Company Moves 7nm Chip Production To TSMC.

Yes, it will cost a lot of money but, don't worry china will foot the bill as most of its fabs (TSMC) are in R.O.C.

https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/amd-7nm-2019-zen-2/

There won't be any slowing down 7nm progress. Samsung is ready to be a backup for AMD if needed but I hear TSMC is already ahead of samsung and ready to start producing dies for AMD.

Like I said, it will be an interesting 2~3 years on what will come of this.
