After bad earnings (really bad: revenue -40%, unit shipment -43%, ASP +5%) from last quarter, AMD has finally made up their minds to officially drop their CPU prices

Yep, I always try to use a coupon, always tried to go to a movie on 'half price' night, etc., and I found a grocery that has 'scratch & dent' stuff marked down about 40% on average.
Our local Aunt Millie's bakery outlet closed down during the pandemic, and now I have to pay regular price for bread, instead of 80 cents, ugh.

Now that I've grown up, I've adopted a more Hedonistic approach. If I can afford it, if I want it, and the price is "in the ball-park" I buy it and just enjoy it, rather than worry about yet another time to "prove" that you're a humble and therefore "worthy" person by choosing depravation.

Same, except I'm on a 2600X and thinking about a 5900X or a 5800X3D. I'd probably pick the 5900X for handbrake reasons and I don't play any newer titles.

Antonline has some really good CPU pricing from time to time. The 7900X is also priced pretty good at $465.

Too bad Slickdeals won't allow any links to them (I think it has to do with the affiliate kickback they don't get).

- high idle power consumption compared to am4 and especially intel
- low end audio codecs
- low speed usb ports , only one 20Gbs port, no usb4 in sight.
- only about 6400 DDR5 speeds supported. We will see how future proof that mobo will be when zen 5 might double the cores creating bandwidth pressure and DDR5 sticks speeds will reach 8000 10000...

The DDR5 support also depends on the CPU. If new(er) Zen 4 and Zen 5 are validated for higher DDR5 speeds, it's possible that b650 boards might support those higher specced memory speeds.

They failed to see the increased revenue and profits of the past couple yrs as a temporary accidental bonus and began counting on it as the new reality. They will pay dearly for the hubris.

Some boards did get access to higher speeds as they became available for the 400 and 500 series boards. It was up to the motherboard manufacturer to allow those speeds. Which sometimes did come down to the board actually being able to handle those higher speeds. The motherboard makers typically have a list of supported rams and speeds. Using an unsupported speed may work fine, but your mileage may vary.

If a brand new board supports say 6400, but the fastest out right now is 7200 (just throwing out numbers), its possible the motherboard maker is purposely trying to segment their boards. If you want the higher speed to be officially supported, you need to pay up for the X-series board. But that doesn't mean the higher speed RAM won't work in the B-series if it allows you to manually configure the speeds.

Glancing at current b650 offerings, 6400 is common "supported" speed. Wonder if currently supported by EXPO or what you see is what you get. Given how greedy mobo makers picked realtek 897 with only two audio jacks in these 200-300$ boards im not optymistic.

In this case, notion of am5 b650 (even x) practical upgradability gets muddy to me. Sure there will be cpu upgrades but how much will it be handicapped running with quite lowly 6400ddr in three years. I have a hunch that newer wider cpu with more cores and rumored accelerators will respond nicely to increased bandwidth. Projections put even ddr5 12000 speeds down the line. It would be pity to be stuck with around half of that paying 250+ for the board. Maybe that's exactly the plan looking at current "segmentation" 101.
