Well I guess the followup to the 7000 series in retail will have a different naming convention, seems stupid to me.

Waiting for HD 9000 then...
Q2 or later is confirmed somewhat?

Not sure what it'll be called (although 9000 makes sense) but would seem to be a ways off if they're releasing OEM 8000 parts. I recall reading ~6mos ago it would be June. At the time I thought it couldn't be right, but it might have been.

I could see them doing some rebranding to pair up with the Never Settle program. Since the drivers are their work are changing perception about their support for their products a brand overhaul and new naming convention could also be used to distance themselves from bad memories from way back when.

Do these statements usually refer to fiscal terminology or not?

Q2 FY 2013 started on January 1st, "normal" Q2 starts on April 1st.

Theoretically they could name Central Islands (the real refresh, the new GPUs) HD8000 as well.

This is a terrible solution, especially when they use 8950 and 8970 instead of 8940 and 8960 so one would be able to differentiate the products. And what will the OEMs say if their products will be outdated in Q2 with a new 9000-series?
I really hope AMD and nVidia would stop doing this, they should both be fined with misleading the customers.

Thats just plain utterly crazy, unless there is a huge flaw in that website. But I guess saved R&D is saved R&D. After Richland I wouldnt put my money on a website flaw either.

Isn't this fraud? I can understand them rebranding a card and naming it one tier lower, but taking one card and slapping the same number tier on it is openly deceptive. People expect the 8970 to be a different card at least, if not faster.

What people? People who buy OEM-PCs probably don't even know about GPU names, let alone about the upcoming Canary Islands GPUs.

It's unfortunately nothing new. It's happened before and it'll happen again.

In my admittedly limited experience, wccftech.com has a pretty poor track record when it comes to the accuracy of their rumours about next-gen graphics cards! They rarely provide sources, and insert tables that, years later, are laughable.

LOL @ Cedar making a 4th consecutive appearance. Caicos at least arguably still has a market to fill (and like Cedar, probably massive chip overstocks).

In a better world, Oland would be replacing both entirely.

Welp, looks like I'm holding onto my Radeon 5850 for another year.........

What's the point of still using the 5450? Intel 3000 and 2500 outright beat it. Intel 2000 is about equal. So there's not even a point of having it in an Intel system as it would slowdown the system's gaming capability significantly. I guess it's for Bulldozer systems?
