Gigabyte 785g AM2+ -- BIOS F8 for Thubans ...
That's my board as well, great to know Thuban is a possibility. My C3 965 is still brand new (a month old), so I won't likely be jumping to a new chip anytime soon. But maybe after a year, in case Bulldozer is really still 2 years away from now. Then again, by that time of Bulldozer, I may have switched to Intel since I'll be needing a whole new platform anyway (no more mobo and DDR2 RAM reuse, I mean)

So why doesn't Mom deserve an i7???
Hmmm... perhaps Gillbot's mom is content with just e-mail, web-surfing, viewing photos and simlar "casual user" type of things?

Not that I'd force my mom to not buy an i7 920 if she had her heart set on it, but given that it has been 25+ years since she last had work as a systems analyst (i.e., I know a little better than her right now), I would also strongly encourage her to get a far cheaper machine, maybe a C2D or Athlon II or whatever other great deal can be readily found. All she does are the same things I mentioned earlier, mostly surf the web about "Brangelina" and some such news materials.

You must have missed my reply right above yours.

For facebook and freecell? NO!

Plus i'm trying to get her a laptop for free. Mom needs to keep her money for better things.

Oh, yes, I missed it, my apologies. I was stuck looking at page 1, and could only see up to post #75 when I made the reply. I didn't notice the thread already exceed 75 posts and had a link to page 2 already.

I went to Portugal (Europe), Emirate Arab United (Asia) and South Africa (duh) last year and was shocked with the prices in those countries. US is king when it comes to buying electronics.

Basically in here (Portugal but rest of EU too) they change the $ to € and call it a day - $90 Athlon II X4 620 - €90 Athlon II X4 620. If you are lucky...

hopefully this new hexa-core cpu will work with AM2+ motherboards after a BIOS update. I have a Biostar TA790GX A2+ motherboard, according to their USA site. They haven't release a new BIOS for this motherboard since August 04, 2009

It should, as the previously mentioned Gigabyte AM2+ board has shown. Whether specific board models will get the needed BIOS update is up to the manufacturer.

BIOSTAR has 5+ 790GX AM2+ boards, 2 of them I own, and neither list support for the 955/965 or any other C3 stepping processors. I'm having my doubts they'll support Thuban unfortuneatly.

BIOSTAR has just gone lazy on us, no BIOS update since Athlon II launched and lack of C3 stepping processor support for my particular board.
Sorry to hear about that. In my experience, MSI and Gigabyte were both excellent in providing BIOS updates, even for their low-end boards. Can't talk about other brands, I have only ever bought either MSI or Gigabyte due to pricing and availability here.

Any rumors as to when this CPU will be released? (Now that the HP ZR24w is out, and the Fermi chip has been released to drive down video card prices, this is the last thing I am waiting for to buy a computer.)

That says 6 core opteron though? Anyways are those results supposed to be good or bad? To me it looks like one 6 core CPU would compete with a 2.8GHz 4 core i7.

its 4 CPU's

4 6 cores.

And that opteron has 3 x more physical cores then that i7 @ near same clock.
So yeah id hope it would beat it otherwise AMD would be in big trouble.

Results... they look decient... not great... and not bad either.
It definitely scales better by looking at it against an older operton on that chart.

i wish that was true but its never the story over here, i remember when the i7 920 came out they cost about £240 and i don't know the story in the US but i am assuming they were about $300, so we never get the exact price exchange plus the pound has really taken a beating i know for fact its not at that exchange rate any more

1 British pound = 1.50900 U.S. dollars

it's called taxes, and you guys have a lot more of them.

See what they do? Depress economic activity. Cause it means you gotta save up more to buy whatever.

http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=23027

just speculation, but at $300 who can say no, but I am over here in the UK so could be about £250 sweet

It doesn't work like that because VAT is higher here than the sales tax in the US. Sales tax in the US varies between 2.9-8.25% dependant on the state, whereas ours (as you know) is a flat rate of 17.5%. So thats an approx. 10% difference already.

US sales taxes: http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/sales.pdf

Plus if you go down the route of ordering from the states and having it shipped to the UK, you get screwed on three accounts, making it not worthwhile:
1. Import tax (which was 18.5% about 1.5 years ago - I'm not sure what it is now).
2. VAT at 17.5%
3. Shipping (plus you pay import tax on 70% of the shipping costs).

Additionally, the shop warranties are less over in the States than they are here. I believe the Egg typically gives a warranty (please correct me if I'm wrong) of 28 days, then it reverts to the manufacturer's warranty. Whereas here, we get 12 months plus whatever remains on the manufacturer's warranty making it easier and quicker to have defective goods replaced or repaired.

So if something goes wrong with the goods you received, you end up forking out again for shipping back to the US. You would also get hit with the import duties and VAT again when the replacement is shipped back to the UK. To get reimbursed on the second lot of import duties, you have to place a claim with Customs for reimbursement (and we both know how much fun that will be!)

It simply isn't worth it.

btw It used to be much easier to calculate the import tax, but it seems that the f*ckwits from Brussels have made the process a lot more complicated (no surprises there).

Edit: Sorry if I de-railed the thread, guys.

So any information on the release of these things? I know I read late March somewhere but we are now past that so I would guess in the next couple of weeks? What about the 890fx chipset?
