Yeah, I know market cap isn't an end-all, but it's still pretty impressive considering they were staring down the barrel of bankruptcy just a decade ago.

Intel does have a working Intel 18A wafer, it is just not what we care about for it is SRAM and not fancy SoCs / Desktop / Workstation / Server CPUs. What I am trying to signify is that Intel is in the liminal space where their claims could be sane or could be insane, we do not know and will not know until the 2nd half of 2024 (and actual chips in computers way past that.)

What I am trying to signify is I take any intel roadmap claims with a grain of salt for they been wrong since 2014, that is 8 years of grief. Yet it may be possible and saying the "insane" word I feel is not helpful.
What ? not helpful ? Its not my job to help Intel, they screwed themselves. And, "2nd half of 2024" just agrees with my statement that I see no real progress for at least 2 years. Servers ? Not a hint that anything competitive is on the horizon. Desktop ? It may be good at gaming, but at what cost ? (power wise) A CPU is not good until it is fast and efficient. One of the two only makes it somewhat useful, not good IMO. When Intel can actually compete on a level playing field, talk to me then and see how I feel. And the 6000 series mobile ? At least the first few reviews look like AMD has that wrapped up.

MY summary (opinion)

server -- all AMD
HEDT -- all AMD
desktop -- mixed Intel has gaming, and single thread, AMD has multi-thread and efficiency
mobile -- AMD ahead in 6000 series, but yes, its early. So slight edge to AMD.

Woud you say Intel is doing anywhere close to well ? I don't think so. Compare that to what is coming out of their marketing, and THATS insane.

Indeed. I'm sure they were bullish on 10nm when someone (BK?) proudly held aloft the first wafer of SRAM cells from that node. What followed was Cannonlake which was a total disaster. Intel was already supposed to be fabbing Ponte Vecchio on 7nm/Intel 4, but Intel 4 is still totally MIA.

The main problem with all that is entrenched market recognition.

Even with technical superiority they can remain ahead in sales as long as their fabs don't clog up - simply because their brand is redonkulously entrenched so far beyond anything AMD can attack.

It's like when I first had a PC in the home and they were known automatically as 'IBM compatible' at the time.

Except now it has become 'Intel inside', and that is a powerful advantage that makes even people who should have the intelligence to dig further just take Intel increasing the generation numbers during the nLake era at face value and keep buying new kit😑

This says more about the market being a bubble than the abilities of AMD or even intel.

As said revenue is what to look at. I prefer AMD CPUs if everything was equal but they are not a good investment right now. Intel is a little over priced but not to bad when compared to the market as a whole.

EDIT: OK I see now. Intel just said their first server chip using extreme ultraviolet lithography is delayed till 2024. Thats a very bad sign, not only for server but their other chips. Not only gives AMD more time but also the new ARM V9 designs.

@Jimzz

Granite Ridge's delay has already been discussed in some other threads. Emerald Rapids is filling in the void.

Yea but that is 2 years at intel 10nm (intel7+?) node. AMD will be at least 1 full node ahead by then if not more. Let alone ARMs V9 will built and in use by then. ARM has been making inroads on the V8 already.
And like before that is if its not delayed even more. Intel does not exactly have a good track record on delays.

Oh I know. Emerald Rapids will not be a significant step forward, and may wind up being inferior to Genoa. All I was saying, is that delay is not exactly a new revelation. Intel just revealed it a few days ago. And the Emerald Rapids rumour was already circulating.

AMD's Q2 earnings call is tomorrow. Depending on its outcome and the stock market reaction to it AMD may well stay ahead this time.

AMD's guidance was $6.5 billion with a $.2 billion over under, so if they hit that I would expect the market to go strong on AMD despite the overall industry being down.

I don't know if they get back to their high water mark, but if the meet expectations and have a strong guidance they're going to keep the upswing going.
