robstv,

good point about the overclocking. I didn't think of that because i have an older s7 board with max of 500Mhz no matter what, so that wasen't important to me. I have my K6-3 400 running at 450 and that's great for me. Not all the K6-3 400s go to 450. They were made a 2 diff voltages and the lower one o/cs better.

I also fleabay'd my old chip and the upgrade cost me so little.

Anyhow, again, if any of you want some imput on K6xs and how your board would react with it and speed gains, etc, i strongly recommend the amdzone.com forums.

CentralScrutinizer Thanks for the info. This is going in the same board you have FIC 503+

Could you please describe your setup, I guess bios JE4330 is the one to use?

Currently there is a good quality PC100 128 stick in it. Runs CAS2 4way

That's what the guy said on the phone. He punched up the SKU and said they were out of stock. Try again though just to be sure. That was about 3 hours ago I guess. Neat thing was he gave me an order number and as soon as I hung up the phone my order was processed. Maybe that dosen't update on the website. Hope you can get one because it seems the extra 10 is better in your pocket than in the chip for the extra 25MHz. But AMDzone forums shows simple OC for the 475+ so I guess it is a wash. Just wish I had thought of this when Axiontech had their stock. I really like that company.

Go see the manufacturer's website for your particular mobo and that's the only way to be absolutely sure.

Well,
People on AMDZone report OK operations with FIC VA503+ 1.1a and even 1.0 The question is what the jumper settings are? I mean it looks like voltage has to be 2.1 What about FSB speed and clock multiplier, etc? If it works for me I'd like to crank that puppy as high as I could?
Again, pleading forgiveness for my cluelessness, I've been out of playing w/ HW for a while... Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Not all mainboards support these chips. I put a K6-3+ chip in an MSI 5185 Gateway mainboard that ran a K6-3 400 chip just fine. The computer would boot and run windows, but in the process the mainboard disabled all cache, which made this chip run like an old 486 chip. When I say slow, I am not kidding. So just having K6-3 support doesn't guarantee support for the plus chips.

I have a K6-3+ 450 in one of the kids PC's. It replaced an MMX 233 on an ASUS P/I-P55T2P4 HX chipset mobo. Yes an HX ancient ass old mobo! I have it running @ 450 (6 x 75). The thing runs very well. Pretty darn fast. I have a friend with a K6-2 500, and it completly dusts it. This upgrade was WELL worth the $50. As others have said, I could have bought a Duron...and a new mobo...and some new ram...and a new case... This PC has been the recipient of quite a few parts from various projects. It is currently a:

ASUS HX mobo
128 meg EDO
K6-3+ 450
Voodoo 3 3000 PCI
Promise Ultra66 PCI
WD 7200 RPM 20 gig
Soundblaster 16 ISA
3Com PCI nic

Not a bad system for a 6 year old!!

> What is all this stuff about 97fsb 100fsb 112fsb

Bus speed vs. clock speed. PC100 is 100fsb, but I'm running this one at 5x112-2.2v which I won't go over....2.3 MAX! 2.0 at 450 is spec., but I want super stable. The other 2 are 6x100.

wow just looked at the VA-503+ mobo. It has like 50 jumpers. This might be fun.

Guys for more overclockability go to overclockedhardware.com and look at the "Overclocking your K6-2/3+ processor" Article, it tells you how to get 600 mhz without messing with jumpers by doing it straight from windows. It works really well, just download a program. I should know I wrote the article. Just go take a look and youll be surprised

O.K., Sounds great!!! I found the CPU for $41. But, for some reason it doesn't want to fit in my motherboard? The $41 shipped upgrade path you mentioned was all I want to spend. Please don't tell me I'll need to "spend even more" to make the CPU fit in my SS7 board. O.K, if I have to spend another $50 to make it fit, I guess it's worth it. HELP!.

If I need to spend more, please tell me exactly what I need to buy, where to buy it at, and how much each piece will cost. That is what jayR has done for us in this post. Please be polite and do the same. Thanks. I know we are talking about a total upgrade price of less than $45 here, but since you piped in with this other $41 upgrade deal, please fill us in! My Voodoo2 needs something more powerful than the current K6-2 300 it is using. I must also have 3 ISA slots, as I don't have the money to buy all new cards to go into my AT case. Thanks again!

BTW, that Duron will be give me a huge boost in games with when used with my VooDoo2 card and PC66 memory, right?

BadMule: You need to figure out when someone's yanking your chain. If you don't have anything constructive to say, quit reading and commenting on this post.

RobsTV: 35 + shipping for the 450 K6-2+ is a great deal for the SS7 upgrade. I upgraded my 380 K6-3 with a 450 K6-3+ for 55.00 plus tax and shipping in Oct and I thought it was worth it. My CpuMark99 scores went from 35-37 with my 380 K6-3 to 60-61 with my 450@550. I had at least a 50% increase in benchmarking scores. I agree with you that people just make general comments like "just buy a Duron for 41.00" without realizing that someone might have to buy different memory, possibly a new case/PS (if they had an AT as I did), on top of a socket A mobo along with some PCI cards needed (sound, modem, etc), since most Socket A boards have one or zero ISA slots. I have an Athlon system, but the 450 K6-3+ still kicks butt. 40 bucks for the best SS7 upgrade you can buy right now is a hot deal. Lot of people just like to bitch, but I appreciate your comments to the people that aren't as informed as others. This is a forum and we are supposed to help others but many have lost sight of this. Keep up the comments.

Thanks for defending me guys. Once longhorn explained the reasons a Duron isn't a viable alternative you should just ignore the rest of the idiots. If they still make comments after they get an explanation they are either stupid or just trying to get your goat (obnoxiousOx). Don't waist your time on them.

Also, this deal is dead.... NOT?
